Director of Talent & Culture Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000 (see detail below) Location: Remote within Michigan with occasional travel to Detroit Michigan Voices is a 501(C)(3) organization that works to help build civic engagement capacity in progressive nonprofit organizations across the state. Michigan Voices has over 100 nonprofit table partners, which we provide with capacity support, regrants, data, and tools to help create a healthy and thriving democracy through a racial equity lens. We focus on Civic Engagement (voter education, registration and turnout, issue advocacy, and constituency engagement), Civic Access (voting rights and election administration), and Civic Representation (census and redistricting). After many years of fiscal sponsorship, Michigan Voices became an independent entity in 2021. In 2022, we grew significantly in response to exciting opportunities and critical needs across Michigan. As a result, we successfully supported critical ballot initiatives, working in close collaboration with our table partners, and regranting over $6 million to over 100 organizations. Our team also grew to meet the needs of our partners and communities, and now we are further building our internal capacity to ensure that our infrastructure effectively supports our team and our partners\' work ahead. ROLE SUMMARY The Director of Talent and Culture (DTC) is a human resources professional that will provide leadership and programming to foster a collaborative and inclusive culture within our team, which is a beautiful mix of people with diverse backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences. The DTC will report to the Executive Director, Sommer Foster, and be a thought and action partner in building people and talent systems and cultivating an environment in which team members thrive. With support as needed from external consultants, the DTC will plan, develop, implement, and continue to assess and improve our human resource systems, policies and practices, such as benefits administration (through a PEO), recruitment/employment, compensation administration, onboarding, employee relations, policy implementation and compliance with federal and state legislation as it pertains to human resources. The DTC will work with the Executive Director and senior leadership team to help staff members continually develop in their jobs, learn from the communities we serve, and contribute to fostering an environment of care and accountability. While the new Director of Talent and Culture will work across our team to collaboratively identify areas of focus, we anticipate that the Director will lead in the following areas: Human Resources

  • Assess and lead the creation or revision of organizational human resource policies, systems, and practices in ways that reflect our values. In collaboration with the senior leadership team, ensure effective administration and implementation of personnel policies and procedures, such as compensation strategiesthat invest in current staff, attract new talent, and retain strong team members.
  • Maintain employee information, ensuring protection, accuracy, and effective tracking of confidential information, including updating of employment information, status-change data for new hires, terminations, title or role changes, payroll, PTO use, etc.
  • Lead employee relations efforts, including acting as a liaison for employee concerns.
  • Liaise with our PEO to handle payroll, compensation, and employee benefits, and deepen our understanding of other services provided.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory HR requirements, standards and other relevant HR policies and guidelines. Liaise with outside legal counsel and advise management on needed actions as appropriate.
Talent and Staff Development
  • Develop and implement new annual review and performance management processes and practices. Support the team in annual performance reviews, setting policies for merit increases and incentives to create a culture of empowerment and accountability. Assist managers with setting employee improvement plans, and where needed, advising on discipline and termination process to ensure all employees are treated fairly and with respect.
  • Build trusting and caring relationships with team members to assess individual, team and organizational development needs and support our team in identifying resources to meet those needs.
  • Design and implement inclusive recruitment and selection processes as well as new hire onboarding processes to recruit and onboard new staff members aligned with our values and who are supported to be effective in their new roles.
Culture and Employee Engagement
  • In partnership with the Executive Director and senior staff, support the ongoing development of a team culture that embodies Michigan Voices\' values and potential. Lead efforts to gather and understand staff input and create actionable steps to realize our ideal culture. Actively provide supports to foster a culture of continual learning and care that engages our team in ways that reflect our energy and passion for the work we do.
  • Organize organization-wide staff team and culture-building events.
  • Build trust with employees and be an active listener and effective solver of people issues.
QUALIFICATIONS Candidates will ideally have many of the below experiences and qualities:
  • At least 3 years of experience in Human Resources performing a broad array of HR responsibilities, preferably with experience in a nonprofit. A PHR or SHRM-SP certification or equivalent experience and knowledge of Michigan and federal employment laws and regulations is preferred.
  • Highest level of professional conduct, integrity, and accountability, and the ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of function and to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or concerns.
  • Experience assessing, developing and strengthening human resource systems, policies, and practices. An approach to systems improvement that begins with listening and involves communication, training, support, and feedback with team members.
  • The ability to build trust and communicate clearly and with empathy both verbally and in writing to people with a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and working styles. The ability to motivate and positively influence others, including through mentoring, coaching, and training.
  • Demonstrated ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve employee relations issues by using wise judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulation and/or law.
  • Highly organized with demonstrated success and comfort managing a significant number of projects independently. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks as assigned with a high level of reliability.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and HRIS systems experience.
  • A deep belief in organizational cultures that are simultaneously caring, inclusive, and flexible to individuals needs while ensuring support and accountability to each other.

The salary range for this role is $80,000 \xe2\x80\x93 $90,000. Placement on the range will be based on factors such as years of relevant experience and internal equity. Benefits include 75% health insurance coverage for employees and eligible family members, 100% coverage for dental, vision, 401k, short & long-term disability, and a $75,000 life insurance policy. Our PTO package encourages breaks and includes at least 22 paid days off per year under our reasonable time off policy that includes paid vacation, sick time, and a gender-neutral parental leave policy. LOCATION Our office is in Detroit, MI, although most of our work is remote with occasional in-person meetings.
