Job Description


Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) is the largest professional association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. NCSS engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. With members in all the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 35 foreign countries, NCSS serves as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, civics, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education. The NCSS membership represents K-12 classroom teachers, college and university faculty members, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and leaders in the various disciplines that constitute the social studies. SUMMARY This position is responsible for every phase of all NCSS publications: journals (Social Education, Social Studies and the Young Learner, and Middle Level Learning), books, and additional resources. The Director develops annual performance goals aligned to the NCSS Strategic Plan; monitors program budgets (projected revenue and expenditures); and engages in data collection reporting under the direction of the Deputy Executive Director. This position provides support to other NCSS Departments, handles various content editing, and additional duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Administration

  • Manage publications staff.
  • Forecast budgets across all publications to include monitoring revenue and expenses for general publications functions (e.g., vendor contracts, freelance contracts, payment approvals, etc.).
  • Construct and monitor publications calendar in conjunction with the Deputy Executive Director.
  • Provide publications consultations to Board members and NCSS department directors when requested, present reports on publications at Board meetings.
  • Manage initiatives of the NCSS advertising representative, evaluate and approve special advertising requests such as inserts, and implement special advertising programs in conjunction with the Deputy Executive Director.
  • Establish prices and organize the delivery of journals and books to the NCSS distributor; coordinate with the distributor on inquiries about NCSS publications.
  • Supervise plans for the NCSS bookstore at the Annual Conference, select books, and organize book signings in coordination with the Professional Learning Services department.
  • Review requests from outside organizations for cooperation on special copyright permissions; negotiate co-publishing and distribution/licensing agreements.
  • Organize, attend, and advise meetings of the Publications Committee; submit reports and organize the implementation of Committee recommendations.
  • Secure the broadest possible grant of intellectual property rights to materials that may be used for multiple purposes by NCSS (and serve as internal expert on questions relating to intellectual property transfer and rights), supervising sales/grants of requests for rights to NCSS copyrighted materials.
Editorial \xe2\x80\x93 Journals and Books
  • Plan the contents of Social Education as Editor: assign guest editors for special sections or issues; oversee relations with department editors; develop special features; commission articles; evaluate volunteered and solicited manuscripts (in conjunction with the Senior Editor); oversee peer review; and determine the suitability of manuscripts for review.
  • Serve as content editor of Social Education manuscripts, fact-checking, revising, rewriting, and abridging the manuscripts.
  • Write Editor\xe2\x80\x99s Notebook and other copy for Social Education as needed.
  • Review and approve all page proofs of each NCSS journal.
  • Evaluate proposals and manuscripts submitted for NCSS books; arrange for reviews; and arrange for authors to make changes and additions.
  • Schedule and oversee the production of books.
  • Proofread all books and printer\xe2\x80\x99s proofs (\xe2\x80\x9cbluelines\xe2\x80\x9d) with assistance of editorial staff.
Content Development
  • Contribute to the design, development, and expansion of the NCSS Digital Library, a collection of classroom activities, teaching ideas, and articles from NCSS publications to drive increased content and revenue.
  • Plan and curate new digital content from NCSS members and guest writers; investigate new delivery channels to expand NCSS\xe2\x80\x99s reader audience and to increase instructional resources for classroom use and drive revenue.
  • Foster relationships with authors, partners, and co-publishers to Identify and manage digital content creators selected from among NCSS membership and other subject matter experts to increase digital resources and drive revenue, when required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in the humanities, social sciences, or related field, with 6-10 years of experience providing editorial, publishing, and management leadership.
  • Deep knowledge of recent scholarship, practices, and trends in social studies education.
  • Experience with editing and production and print processes.
  • Ability to analyze market trends, sales data, and derive publishing strategies.
  • Knowledge of metadata best practices.
  • Experience working with new and experienced authors to develop manuscripts and series.
  • Self-reliance, good problem-solving skills, results-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
  • Thrives in a remote work environment.
  • Proven ability to manage data and complexities within it.
  • Superior organization and analytical skills, and ability to work under deadlines.
  • Nonprofit publishing experience preferred, especially with an education association.
  • Proficient experience with Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Slack.
