Black Hills State University is seeking applicants to fill a Director of Public Safety position. The Director of Public Safety must possess the ability to function decisively, authoritatively and calmly in emergency and critical situations providing a safe and secure atmosphere for students, faculty, staff and guests. They must also be able to provide customer services to the general public as well as members of the University community.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Directs and coordinates routine and emergency public safety operations including emergency management planning, establishing policies and procedures and providing proper training;
- Serves as 1st Responder to all medicals, fire alarms, criminal and civil complaints on the BHSU campus and its properties;
- Provides safety & security recommendations as well as law enforcement input and recommendations as a member of the Students of Concern (Threat Assessment Team) and member of the Northern Hills Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART)
- Possesses knowledge of methods and procedures for crime prevention, law enforcement and security procedures and techniques;
- Coordinates annual fire safety room inspections in all residence halls and fire/life safety building inspections;
- Proactively patrols campus buildings and grounds for the purpose of deterring, detecting and investigating suspected criminal activity to include building/grounds checks for unsecured doors/windows, unauthorized individuals/intruders;
- Identifies conditions which might indicate danger or loss or damage to persons or property;
- Demonstrates the ability to function decisively, authoritatively, and calmly during emergencies and stressful situations;
- Demonstrates the ability to operate communication systems and electronic monitoring devices;
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with other departments on and off campus and to give and follow oral and written instructions;
- Demonstrates the ability to conduct field interviews;
- Demonstrates the ability to record and recall information concisely and accurately via written documentation;
- Demonstrates the ability to exercise tact and patience during contacts with disruptive individuals and people of varying backgrounds and temperaments during potential crisis situations;
- Provides customer services to the general public as well as members of the University community;
- Assists visitors with locating events, buildings, offices and personnel;
- Prepares in advance to provide testimony during criminal, civil and administrative proceedings;
- Attends training and obtains certifications necessary for the continued advancement of the University Department of Public Safety;
- Provides a proactive safety program through regular and comprehensive training to the campus community in Active Shooter scenarios, emergency procedures, campus lock down, fire drills and evacuation procedures;
- Serves as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies;
- Responsible for First Responder, 1st Aid and other emergency equipment are maintained and inspected properly;
- Responsible for establishing university safety policies and procedures as necessary and ensure safety policies are adhered to;
- Supervises, trains and mentors subordinate staff in the Department of Public Safety including work-study positions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of 5 -10 years experience in law enforcement or safety/security services.

- Must be licensed/certified as a Peace Officer in the state of South Dakota or be eligible to be certified by meeting all requirements for reciprocity as approved by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Standards and Commission or being able/willing to obtain state licensure.

- Must have a minimum of 5-years supervisory experience within a law enforcement agency.

- Current certifications in American Heart Association CPR/AED & Advanced First Aid.

- Must be certified in Crisis Intervention Response or similar training/experience.

- Must have the ability to lift 75 lbs, run short distances and climb stairs and ladders and work from elevated platforms.

- Sensory Requirements: Visual acuity of 20/20 or better, corrected by spectacles or hard or soft contact lenses, if uncorrected, acuity must be 20/80 or better. Vision capable of distinguishing basic color groups against a favorable background. Uncorrected hearing with no loss greater than 25 db in the 500, 1000, 2000, or 3000 hertz frequencies as measured by an audiometer.

- Must possess and demonstrate a high degree of customer service skills.

- Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation.

- Demonstrates regular and reliable work-related attendance.

PREFFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Two-year Associate of Science Degree

- Skilled in decision-making and problem solving

- Ability to utilize personal computers and assorted software required; experience in Microsoft Office and database management

- Experience in organizing complex tasks and procedures while attending to detail

- Demonstrated ability to counsel and mentor students and ability to foster a cooperative and safe work environment
