JOB DESCRIPTION

The Opportunity:

This role is an exciting opportunity to serve as a leader within a diverse and dynamic team committed to the audacious task of transforming public education in Providence Public Schools. By any measure, and over many years, the Providence Public School District (PPSD) has failed to deliver on its most fundamental obligation: fair and equitable access to a rigorous education for all children, but specifically Multilingual Learners who make up 34% of the district and trail behind academically when compared to their Gen. Ed. peers. The time for change is now and the district is in the process of a game-changing transformation led by the newly appointed State Turnaround Superintendent, in coordination with the Rhode Island Department of Education and with the support of the larger Providence community. The Supervisor of Multilingual Learner (MLL) Instruction and Services will support the district\'s reform strategy to ensure all Multilingual Learners get the support they need to access a rigorous education.

The Role:

This is an outstanding opportunity for an education leader with experience working with Multilingual Learners in an urban setting. The Supervisor of MLL Instruction and Services will work closely with District Administrative teams to support the transformation of public education in Providence. The Supervisor of MLL Instruction and Services will be primarily responsible for supporting the implementation and expansion of quality ESL and Bilingual/ Dual Language instruction, programs and services that will result in positive academic achievement for Multilingual Learners in the district.

The Candidate:

Successful candidates must demonstrate a deep belief in the capacity of ALL students to achieve at high levels and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse set of partners and stakeholders to drive transformative change within and outside of an organization. To succeed in this role, you must have a strong background in Multilingual Learner pedagogy and research based practice, you must have extensive experience working with the following MLL subgroups: Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education, Dually Identified students, and Long Term MLLs. You must have experience creating and leading high quality professional development. You must exhibit strong leadership, be a master communicator, and have a track record of successfully collaborating with a large number of adults. Successful candidates must also possess a high level of comfort with ambiguity and the willingness to seek new solutions to old problems.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

RIDE Certification Requirements

  • Building Level Administrator or District Level Administrator
  • ESL Certification (K-12 ESL Specialist Certification preferred)
OR * Bilingual/Dual Language Certification

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES

Direct the district\'s initiatives to provide and expand effective, efficient, and high quality implementation of MLL programs

Support the district\'s efforts in expanding the Seal of Biliteracy

Provide leadership, oversight and accountability of implementation of the MLL education policies and programs in PPSD;

Assure the effective allocation and utilization of resources for MLL programs and services.

Ensure all MLL instruction is rigorous, standards aligned, grade level appropriate and provides deliberate and appropriate scaffolds.

Lead, design, and implement new initiatives and professional development to ensure PPSD provides all MLLs with opportunities to engage in discipline-specific practices that build conceptual understanding, analytical practices, and language competence simultaneously.

Supervise assigned staff including but not limited to district MLL Managers, and district EL Collaborative teachers

Provide regular coaching and support to assigned staff

Meet regularly with staff to discuss and resolve priorities, workload, critical concerns and technical issues;

Develop staff skills and conduct yearly performance evaluations;

Develop priorities and assign tasks and projects; assure appropriate services are provided and goals are defined and achieved;

Compile, evaluate and analyze data regularly, in order to drive improvement;

Assure the MLL office activities and procedures are in compliance with all laws, policies, regulations and standards.

Collaborate effectively with PPSD schools and departments, public agencies and community organizations.

Support district efforts to increase MLL family engagement

Demonstrate positive and collaborative behavior when interacting with students, families, clients, visitors, and PPSD staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and PPSD information.

Attend all district and school-level meetings as required.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS

Bachelor and/or Master\'s degree in applicable field of education

A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience directly serving Multilingual Learners

At least two (2) years of leadership experience (including but not limited to coaching, content specialist, building administrator).

Multilingual candidate in at least one of the district\'s major languages preferred (Spanish, Swahili, Arabic, Khmer, Portuguese, Creole)

Ability to use English Language Proficiency Standards in conjunction with CCSS to support the development of academic proficiency for Multilingual Learners

Strong organizational and communication skills

Successful experience working with diverse populations

Demonstrated ability to use, interpret, and analyze data to accelerate student achievement

Ability to collaborate with colleagues, district and school-based administrators, and consultants and effectively lead teams

Ability to design, deliver, and coordinate high quality professional development in a variety of venues

Ability to effectively use research to guide decision-making and planning

Demonstrated proficiency with PC-based computer applications, Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, google applications, web applications, and industry-specific technology.
