Job Responsibilities

The Director of Communications leads the development, deployment, and assessment of a comprehensive communications plan for University Libraries that increases the awareness of library services, collections, and expertise. Communications will measurably improve engagement with the Libraries among the USC community, within the state, and with national and international audiences. Communications highlight the Libraries\' role as a vital academic support service and partner in supporting the research, teaching, and learning mission of the University. The position directly oversees content creators and works in concert with library faculty and staff and other communications professionals to produce and distribute communications and marketing materials in a variety of formats.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Graduate degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field and at least two years of relevant professional experience. A bachelor\'s degree in one of those fields, or a related field, with at least four years of relevant experience is also acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in a research library, museum, or other cultural heritage institution. Demonstrated ability to leverage a wide array of formats and techniques to reach diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to engage with local, regional, or national media.

Additional Comments

Knowledge of principles and practices of effective information dissemination via news media, social media, and other communication modes. Knowledge of principles and methods of planning, producing, assessing, and continuously improving public relations programs. Demonstrated ability to gather, synthesize, organize, and present information clearly and concisely in writing, orally, and visually. Time and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to recruit, supervise, coach, and inspire staff in carrying out communications plans. Ability to work effectively with short or fluid timelines, move ideas into messages, and to balance multiple deadlines. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in both management and messaging, with appropriate sensitivity to the impact of messaging on historically underrepresented or marginalized people.
