Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Custodian to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in various settings, including commercial, industrial, and residential environments. This role is essential in ensuring a safe and pleasant atmosphere for employees, clients, and visitors.

Primary Purpose:

Clean and maintain district facilities using routine procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds. Provide students with a safe, attractive, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma or GED

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures.

Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance

Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment

Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies

Essential Job Functions

Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning floors, whiteboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms. Sweep classrooms daily and dust furniture. Shovel and sand walks and steps as needed. Clean corridors after each school day and during the day when needed. Scrub, hose, and disinfect toilets and floors daily, and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily. Wash windows on both the inside and outside at least once each year or as needed. Keep the school buildings and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean. Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash/waste. Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed. Assist with lunchroom set up or other area setup, including arranging tables and chairs. Perform preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff. Report to the supervisor any damage to school property or major repairs as soon as they are discovered. Move furniture or equipment within the building as directed by the principal. Assist in setting up facilities for special events. Assist with opening and closing the building each school day checking to ensure that all exit doors are open, and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy. Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities. Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job and timeliness. Complete district-required training. Other duties as assigned.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Requires the ability to frequently use power tools and equipment, including but not limited to a floor buffer/stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, other hand tools, shampooer, etc... Requires the ability to frequently stand, sit, kneel/squat, bend/stoop, push/pull, or twist. Requires the ability to lift and carry heavy items (45 lbs. and over) daily. Requires the ability to frequently walk, climb stairs/ladders/scaffolding; grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching, and overhead reaching. Requires the ability to work both outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, on and around vehicles and machinery with moving parts. Requires the ability to frequently work with exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, and vibration; exposure to chemical and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts. Requires the ability to maintain emotional control while under stress and in stressful situations. Requires the ability to occasionally work prolonged or irregular hours. Requires timeliness and regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
