Job Description


OVERVIEW The archeologist is a field position assigned to an area office and supports work for the Kansas Cultural Resource Program of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The incumbent serves as a cultural resources specialist associated with soil, water, plant, and related conservation concerns, and is responsible to assist an area archaeologist with guidance and assistance to field personnel and technical teams for conservation, protection and enhancement of cultural resources. The archeologist provides planning, application, guidance and training activities in the assignments of responsibility, which includes ensuring the technical quality of cultural resource reviews and participating in environmental reviews. This employee is required to operate in both outdoor environments and office settings while effectively communicating with associates and the public. The position is a full-time employee of a local county conservation district. Four positions will be hired for placement in the Kansas cities of Emporia, Hays, Hutchinson, and Manhattan to perform duties in a regional area typically encompassing about 25 counties. SALARY AND PAY RANGE The archeologist position is started at an NRCS equivalent Grade 7 or 9 rating depending on the level of background and experience of a qualifying candidate. The beginning salary of the Grade 7, Step 1 entry- level is $46,696 plus a $4,800 health insurance incentive. The beginning salary of the Grade 9, Step 1 entry-level is $57,118 plus a $4,800 health insurance incentive. Employees are eligible to advance up to a GS-11 rating with satisfactory performance evaluations and sufficient time in grade. REQUIRED / PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 1. College level degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related discipline is required
2. Graduate level degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related discipline is preferred
3. Ability to effectively interpret technical information developed in archival surveys and investigations
4. Knowledge of applicable federal laws regarding cultural resources and historic preservation CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT A prospective employee will be required to pass all applicable background checks requested by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator\xe2\x80\x99s license for the type of vehicle(s) operated to perform the duties of this position.
