Position Summary

Facilitate the delivery of information through operation of a community library including branches, or a Mobile Library Unit, or through work on a public service desk at the Corvallis Library. Provide responsive patron service by assisting in the use of library materials, requests for information and materials from other system collections, and through appropriate referral. Provide input to supervisors on improving the effectiveness of library service. Serve as computer and technology liaison. These tasks are illustrative only and may include other related duties.

Full-time, 40 hours per week
AFSCME-represented position
12-month probationary period

Essential Functions
Responsible for the daily operation of materials circulation system, fines and overdues, issuing of library cards, and requests for reserve materials in a branch or mobile location. Performs full range of circulation functions at all locations.

Answers patron questions and makes appropriate referrals to librarians and other system and community resources. Assists public in locating materials through print, non-print, and electronic resources. Instructs patrons in use of library print, non-print and electronic resources.

Maintains effective size and scope of collection by selecting materials to be transferred to other locations. Accurately inputs and maintains related records.

Provides tutoring to patrons on computer use, including software and internet use.

Carries out public programs such as Storytime. Plans programs as assigned and participates in system-wide program planning efforts as assigned.

Assists librarians in public relations, marketing, and outreach efforts. May design and produce bulletin boards, displays, printed promotional materials, and other related items or materials.

Assists librarians in collection development. Recommends items for selection to meet needs of library users.

May serve, as assigned, as liaison to other agencies such as local government jurisdictions in branch libraries.

Schedules and trains staff and volunteers when appropriate.

Provides input to supervisor on planning and development of services, funding, facility development, policy issues, operations, and public programs.

May serve as the computer and technology liaison to the Library Technology work group.

May work rotating schedules including evenings and weekends. May be assigned to work at any location using this position classification.

Performs a variety of support tasks including typing, file maintenance, shelving materials, light custodial work, opening and closing the facility or vehicle, and monitoring basic building, vehicle and equipment needs.

Operates and drives a motor vehicle safely and legally.

Acts ethically and honestly; applies ethical standards of behavior to daily work activities and interactions. Builds confidence in the City through own actions.

Conforms with all safety rules and performs work is a safe manner.

Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences.

Maintains effective work relationships.

Adheres with all City and Department policies.

Corvallis Community Library Specialist
Incumbents in this position facilitate the delivery of library services by working at any public service desk, including Adult, Youth, and Circulation, at the Corvallis Library. Must be able to answer basic reference and reader\xe2\x80\x99s advisory questions, assist patrons with basic computer, software, and printer use, and enforce the Patron Code of Conduct. Refers patrons to Reference Librarians for advanced functions. Assists librarians or managers in planning of and deliver library programs, including outreach programs. Assists librarians in collection development. Performs the full range of duties in Circulation. Able to and willing to make daily operational decisions within established policies and procedures. Although much of the work is independent, work is performed as part of a work group team.

Qualifications and Skills
Education and Experience High school diploma, or equivalent. Two years of college course work is highly desirable. Two years of customer service related experience including at least one year of library experience required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to work independently within system policies and procedures with minimal supervision. Knowledge of library procedures, essential library functions, and the system collection. Ability to use the catalog, data base, reference materials, and perform online information searches. Considerable knowledge of computer operations particularly as they apply to the library. Ability to use complex computer routines and explain them to others as necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Knowledge of computer hardware and software applications used by the position, ability to troubleshoot computer problems, and the ability to instruct patrons in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and electronic communications, and online databases as required to deliver Library services. Ability to deliver excellent customer service to diverse audiences. Ability to monitor patron behavior and enforce the Library Code of Conduct. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to get along well and maintain effective working relationships with community groups, schools, volunteers, the public and other employees and respond in a timely, respectful, and responsive manner. Ability to lift, move, shelve and unshelve books and other library materials on a regular basis; ability to handle boxes of materials up to 50 pounds Special Requirements Ability to operate and drive mobile library vehicles and effectively manage vehicular emergencies. Possession or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Oregon Drivers License. Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving. Demonstrable commitment to sustainability.
