Chief of Staff to the Chief Scientific Officer (Senior Director)

Vertex is actively seeking a highly motivated individual as Chief of Staff to the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO). The CSO Organization spans Global Research, Preclinical Development, Pharmaceutical Sciences, External Innovation, Internal Innovation, Data, Technology and Engineering across Vertex. The Chief of Staff will partner with the CSO to develop and enable strategic and organizational effectiveness across the organization and cross-functionally with the rest of Vertex. The Chief of Staff manages the CSO Leadership Team (CSO LT) including development and execution of annual functional and corporate goals. The Chief of Staff is also meeting manager for the corporate cross-functional Research and Development Committee (RDC) charged with delivering the R&D portfolio. The role is both strategic and operational and provides a unique opportunity to interact with leaders across the organization including the Executive Committee (EC), the RDC, the CSO LT, and colleagues spanning all levels, geographies and functions.
The role will report to the CSO. The successful candidate is expected to be in role for ~24 months following which they will take their previous experiences and learnings from the Chief of Staff position to contribute in their next career opportunity at Vertex.
Strategic

  • Acts as a strategic thought partner to the CSO identifying and executing on topics impacting Global Research, Preclinical Development, Pharmaceutical Sciences, External Innovation, Internal Innovation, Data, Technology and Engineering, including development of strategic goals, and facilitating their successful implementation.

  • Independently leads strategic projects relating to the R&D pipeline, organization effectiveness, corporate innovation, data and technology.

Operational

  • Supports operationalization of the CSO organization strategic plans including proactive design and development of processes to enable the CSO LT to achieve their objectives; this includes, but is not limited to, managing CSO LT meetings/agendas, goal setting and reviews including metrics, and teambuilding activities.

  • Coordinates smooth business operations within and across the CSO organization and aligning with partner functions such as HR, Finance, Communications, facilities, etc.

  • Identifies and prioritizes key tasks and allocation of responsibility and time for the CSO, Chief of Staff and other members of the CSO leadership team in order to maximize overall effectiveness, sustainability and career development.

Communications

  • Communicates up, down and sideways to ensure CSO and other LT members are apprised of progress, key risks, and strategic needs of the CSO organization.

  • Leads the office of the CSO in defining key communications and preparing corresponding reports, briefings, and presentations across stakeholders, including CSO LT, RDC, EC, and Board of Directors, as well as internal CSO Organization meetings (town hall, site visits, leadership meetings) and ad hoc external meetings.

  • Represents CSO organization and the CSO in a variety of cross-functional interactions including but not limited to Chief of Staff to the CEO and COO, Commercial, Development, Legal, HR.

Requirements

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree required.

  • 12+ years in the pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industries

  • Exceptional ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities

  • Outstanding communication skills both prose and presentations to diverse audiences

  • Strong listening skills and ability to synthesize and report diverse perspectives.

  • Collaborative style, with an ability to build trust, manage conflict and influence multiple stakeholders

  • Independently navigates organizational complexities, recommends solutions, and builds support

  • Strategic thinker with a proven track record of driving successfully to implementation

  • Innovative leader with openness to and skeptical evaluation of new ideas

  • Solid business knowledge with knowledge of related functions outside of CSO organization

In this Hybrid-Eligible role, you can choose to be designated as:
Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
