Position Summary:

Founded in 2017 with a $200 million gift from Orange County philanthropists Susan and Henry Samueli, UCI Health Affairs is a first of its kind health science enterprise and is unique to Orange County, Calif. Together, the Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences and UCI Health form UCI Health Affairs. Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences is translating our tripartite mission to \xe2\x80\x9cdiscover, teach, heal,\xe2\x80\x9d into the diverse healthcare workforce of the future and groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Creating a first-of-its-kind alliance across health disciplines, the college comprises the School of Medicine, the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, the recently launched School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, the future School of Population & Public Health (scheduled to be accredited in 2021), the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, and research units focused on cancer, clinical translational science, precision health and stem cells. The college shares a robust synergy with UCI Health, the only academic health system in Orange County. UCI Health Affairs is transforming education, discovery, and patient care to benefit the region, state and nation.

Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, the Chief of Staff (COS) serves as a critical strategic advisor and thought partner to the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs(VCHA) and by extension his senior leadership team, organizing, coordinating, and translating initiatives and plans into action. The COS will provide executive support and counsel to the VCHA, triage legal and crisis management issues, engage constituents in a meaningful and transparent manner, and assist the Vice Chancellor in all forms of communication. The COS problem solves, identifies concerns, and evaluates complex subjects by integrating knowledge of the VCHA\'s goals and management style, campus unit operations, and UC policies and procedures. Where designated, the COS will lead initiatives and advisory committees and staffs critical advisory and committees which have broad impact. The COS represents the VCHA in all manner of situations with tact and diplomacy and requires a dedication to consultation and consensus-building; the COS also manages confidential and sensitive issues for the VCHA.

Required:

Minimum 5 years\' relevant job experience working in progressively complex jobs

Bachelor\'s degree in related area and / or related experience / training.

Expert knowledge of organizational processes, protocols and procedures. Working knowledge of organization and system-wide organizational reporting structure, as well as an understanding of the interactive roles of management throughout the organization. Demonstrates advanced strategic thinking and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions. Knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand client priorities, issues, motivations and constraints. Advanced consulting, relationship building and strategic thinking skills. Advanced analytical, problem-solving, project planning and implementation skills. Knowledge of the legal constraints and opportunities for higher education in the State of California and through Federal programs and regulations. Skills to effectively lead highly significant engagements from inception to conclusion. Highly skilled in navigating complex organizations. Advanced written, verbal and presentation skills for influencing and facilitating sustained change. Ability to articulate the vision, mission and values of the Health Affairs and interpret and implement procedures, processes and policies. Ability to manage confidential and sensitive issues and performs a wide range of duties requiring tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, organizational skills, flexibility, and strict confidentiality.

Preferred:

Advanced degree preferred.

Knowledge of UC governance, organizational structure, and policies and procedures. Working knowledge of the operational and long-range goals and policies of the University of California and the UC Irvine campus. Thorough knowledge of University policies with regard to assessment, administration, allocation, and appropriate use of resources.
