Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor\'s degree or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion including experience working with individuals with varying identities and backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience advising, mentoring, coaching, teaching and/or counseling students.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and/or present to groups.
  • Proven experience in building strong relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders including students, employers, alumni, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to plan and execute tailored services (programming, resource development, etc.) to meet students\' career management needs.
  • Experience with or understanding of career development theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students of color, first-generation students, international students, and/or students from various diverse backgrounds and identities.
  • Ability to effectively supervise, train, direct, and evaluate student workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with office technology, which may include Handshake, Linkedln, Canva, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
  • Familiarity with career assessments and use.

Appointment: This is a full-time (40 hours per week) 10-month Civil Service, annually-renewable based on funding and performance. This position reports to the Career Center Director.

Anticipated 10 month contract dates: August 14th, 2023 - June 9th, 2024
Anticipated salary range: $20/hr to $24/hr

About the Job:
The Career Development Specialist\'s primary purpose is to:
  • Help students develop skills to communicate their value, skills, and abilities to future employers, graduate, or professional schools.
  • Create and deliver career readiness content through presentations, drop-ins, 1:1 or group appointments, and events.
  • Collaborate with the department, division, campus, and system colleagues on career readiness initiatives and strategic plan priorities.

Responsibilities:
This role is committed to delivering exceptional student support, being welcoming to all, and striving for continuous improvement and innovation. The work will include:

Career Development Programming (65%)
  • Design and deliver career development programming through presentations, workshops, drop-ins, and events.
  • Provide undergraduate student document review and individual career coaching for career exploration, job and internship search, and graduate school planning.
  • Build rapport with students through outreach to classes and student organizations to share career resources and encourage their engagement in career planning.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty and staff to develop students\' career readiness skills, support departmental efforts, and stay current on industry trends.
  • Collaborate with Employer Engagement staff to identify and develop relationships with employers to build recruitment, internship, co-op, research, & employment opportunities.

Strategic Planning & Professional Development (20%)
  • Assist with Career Fairs and department/division/campus/system wide events.
  • Commitment to ongoing social justice and racial equity work in order to identify, challenge, and remove barriers to access at the individual, community, and system level.
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, and events to expand professional skills and knowledge to keep current on best practices and trends within the career development and higher education fields.
  • Serve on departmental, campus, or system wide committees as assigned/elected.
  • Other duties and special projects as appropriate to the individual\'s background, experience, and interests that support the department\'s strategic plan.

Student Worker Supervision (15%)
  • Supervise, hire, and train student workers.
  • Meet with students individually to monitor project progress, discuss individual training needs and wants, and address concerns as needed.

  • ENGAGE in meaningful experiences to shape students\xe2\x80\x99 roadmap.
  • DESIGN their roadmap and ways to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities to employers and/or graduate or professional schools. We support all majors through our centralized office that guides almost 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students plus alumni. We are proud to be a part of the Student Life Division with a dotted line reporting structure to Academic Affairs.
