SUMMARY/OVERVIEW This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of boilers and ancillary equipment in VA hospitals and other Government facilities. The Boiler Technician A Level is a top level working supervision role responsible for maintaining steam and heating systems in large buildings and handles equipment such as low-pressure steam boilers, high-pressure steam boilers, electric steam boilers, and hot water heating systems. The Boiler Technician A Level is responsible to personally certify tests results for all Boiler Safety Device Testing that he conducts. Class A Technicians are responsible for the daily training and mentoring of all Boiler Service Technicians B Level and Boiler Apprentices under his supervision and responsible to update the Division Manager to the status of all jobs that are issued to him. To be considered an A Level Boiler Technician, Venergy requires the technician to have the confidence, knowledge, skills, and capability to perform safety device testing, combustion tuning, internal and external inspection and maintenance of all boiler and burner systems along with its ancillary equipment in accordance with ASME and National Board codes, Local Jurisdictions and Authorized Inspectors requirements, Original Equipment Manufactures Instructions, and all VA directives. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performing routine service & preventative maintenance contract work at sites throughout the nation.
  • Performing boiler / burner Safety Device Testing
  • Supervise workers to prepare boilers for annual internal inspections by certified National Board inspectors.
  • Supervise workers to prepare deaerators for their six-year internal NDE inspections.
  • Understand and be able to perform upgrades to existing boiler controls to meet with VA Compliance.
  • Understand and be able to perform upgrades to achieve increase burner reliability.
  • Understand and be able to perform conversions to achieve higher fuel efficiency.
  • Understand and be able to perform gas train upgrades to meet NFPA Code Requirements.
  • Be able to perform boiler refractory repairs.
  • Be able to make repairs to Steam, Condensate, Fuel and Water Piping.
  • Understand steam traps and steam systems.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of four (4) years experience in the boiler and burner industry.
  • Certification and/or Licensing (Journeyman Gas Fitter, Pipefitters, Manufacturers Factory Training, etc.) preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints and maintenance and operation manuals.
  • Aptitude in math and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Prior military experience preferred.
  • Travel will be required.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification preferred.
SKILLS
  • Strong knowledge of boiler/burner sequence of operation, combustion tuning, controls, electrical, piping.
  • Extensive knowledge of industry best practices, equipment maintenance & use, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Advanced working knowledge of tools and testing equipment to perform duties.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate and report effectively.
  • Good physical condition and stamina.
  • Ability to direct the work of others and make quick decisions.
  • Well-organized and always focused on safety.
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Deep knowledge of the boiler industry and processes.
  • Understanding of use and maintenance of electrical systems.

Requires good visual acuity and hearing. WORK ENVIRONMENT Regularly works around moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat, and humidity.
