Job Summary: A Body Shop Technician, also known as an Auto Body Technician or Collision Repair Technician, is responsible for repairing damaged vehicle bodies and restoring them to their pre-accident condition. This role involves a combination of skills, including auto body repair, painting, and refinishing, to ensure vehicles are safe, structurally sound, and cosmetically appealing.
Key Responsibilities:
Vehicle Inspection and Assessment:
+ Inspect damaged vehicles to assess the extent of body and structural damage.
+ Create a detailed repair plan, including a list of required parts and materials.
+ Estimate the cost and time required for repairs and communicate this information to customers and insurance adjusters.
Body Repair:
+ Straighten and realign damaged vehicle frames and structures using frame straightening equipment.
+ Repair or replace damaged body panels, fenders, doors, and other exterior components.
+ Weld and fabricate metal parts as necessary.
+ Perform body filler work and sand surfaces to prepare them for painting.
Painting and Refinishing:
+ Mix and match paint colors to vehicle manufacturer specifications.
+ Apply primers, sealers, base coats, and clear coats using spray guns and other painting equipment.
+ Perform paint blending and feathering to achieve seamless color matching.
+ Ensure a smooth and glossy finish while minimizing imperfections.
Dent Removal:
+ Use various techniques, such as paintless dent repair (PDR), to remove dents and creases from vehicle surfaces.
+ Repair or replace damaged trim, moldings, and glass as needed.
Quality Control:
+ Inspect repaired vehicles to ensure they meet safety and quality standards.
+ Perform final checks for proper alignment, fit, finish, and paint quality.
+ Test drive vehicles to verify their roadworthiness and address any issues.
Documentation and Reporting:
+ Maintain accurate records of repair work, including labor hours, materials used, and parts replaced.
+ Complete repair orders and documentation for insurance claims.
+ Provide detailed explanations and documentation to customers regarding repair processes and costs.
Safety and Compliance:
+ Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines when working with tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.
+ Comply with environmental regulations for the disposal of paint, chemicals, and waste materials.
Customer Interaction:
+ Interact with customers to explain repair processes, timelines, and costs.
+ Address customer concerns and inquiries in a professional and courteous manner.
+ Provide excellent customer service to ensure customer satisfaction.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a formal automotive collision repair program is preferred.
Proven experience as a Body Shop Technician or Collision Repair Technician.
Certification in auto body repair or paint application (e.g., I-CAR, ASE, or manufacturer-specific certifications) is a plus.
Proficiency in using auto body repair tools, welding equipment, and painting tools.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge of automotive systems and structures.
Physical ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy vehicle parts.
Valid driver's license and a clean driving record (if required).
