Under the general direction of the Deputy Fire Chief or designee, the Battalion Chief manages and coordinates the field operations and daily activities of assigned crews, battalion programs and fire and rescue services. Functions as a vital member of the Fire/EMS Department and provides direct support to the administrative team to ensure effective supervision, command, and control of fire, rescue, and EMS operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: Associate's degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Emergency Medical Services, or related field andfive years of progressively responsible fire and/or EMS experience in a career or combination (career/volunteer) fire/rescue organization to include a minimum of three (3) years in a lead or management capacity with responsibility for operational oversight, logistics, staff supervision and training. OR an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling seven (7) years.

In specific area of assignment, duties may include: Fulfills the duties and responsibilities of the positions below the rank of Battalion Chief, as necessary. Incumbents possessing a current Paramedic License may be assigned to divisions, battalions and/or shifts requiring EMS oversight. Using established standard operating procedures approved by the Fire Chief, establishes Command of the ICS system at fires, emergency medical scenes, technical rescue scenes, and fire prevention operations in the County; Responds to all types of fire, rescue, and medical emergencies and assumes command and control as needed, and/or provides service directly to customers as part of an emergency response team. May set up or assume multiple command posts at a single incident; Supervises overhaul and salvage operations. Coordinates day-to day acute emergency responses throughout the county. With Deputy Chief approval, coordinates team responses for various specialty requests such as technical rescue or wildland deployments throughout the County, state, or nation Exercises supervision over line personnel to include EMT-Basic/Firefighters, EMT- Intermediate/Firefighters, Paramedic/Firefighters, and volunteers Observes, addresses and documents employee behavior and performance; in coordination with the Deputy Chief, prepares performance evaluations; discusses performance with assigned staff; counsels employees concerning performance improvements; recommends discipline of career personnel and corrective actions for volunteers, as necessary. Responsible for communicating and clarifying management orders and decisions to subordinate personnel. Briefs subordinate staff regularly on policy, procedures, bulletins, and other relevant information. Informs subordinate staff of all memo's, SOP's, SOG's bulletins, notices, and other pertinent information from previous shifts and command staff. Reviews and approves leave requests and shift trades to ensure shifts are appropriately staffed. Reviews reports prepared by staff to ensure completeness and consistency with policies and procedures. Addresses employee problems, concerns, and complaints, updates chain of command on issues and suggests solutions that may rectify the situation. Coordinates with the Deputy Chief, or designee, to ensure assigned crews are receiving appropriate training. Coordinates with the Deputy Chief, or designee, to provide training and drills in firefighting and EMS methods, techniques and related subjects as needed and maintains personnel training records as directed and in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements. Organizes and monitors battalion programs and support procedures regarding staffing, record keeping, and fire tactics to maintain compliance with standard operating procedures. Completes all necessary reports, correspondence, and documentation as required in the performance of assigned duties. Works with the Deputy Chief or designee on assigned logistical activities to include, but not limited to fleet maintenance, station maintenance; and inventory, maintenance and procurement of supplies and equipment Confers, coordinates, and works with other Battalion Chiefs both internally and externally, other city, County, State, and Federal personnel and as necessary. Attends meetings with staff and/or volunteers as required. Assists the Fire Chief or designee in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and priorities of operations Participates in the recruitment and retention of new hires and new volunteers; participates in the new member process, including interviews and assessments as directed; provides oversight of the orientation of new employees and/or volunteers May participate in recruitment and/or public education events Serves as liaison with volunteer districts as needed; coordinates activities with the Volunteer District officers and personnel as directed that may include ensuring compliance and reporting of Volunteer PERA, Volunteer Nominal Fee Program, VFIS, and/or similar programs Working with the Deputy Chief or designee, functions within an assigned budget to ensure adherence with county purchasing and budget policies and procedures. Responsible for ensuring the confidentiality of information including, but not limited to, patient information, department/county records, personnel information, financial information, and collective bargaining information. Performs other related duties as assigned.
