Job Description

Installs, maintains, and repairs manufacturing equipment and fixtures. Conducts complex maintenance activities primarily on machinery and related equipment. Maintains repair and maintenance records. Troubleshoots problems and resolves complex and high priority issues. Typically has more than 5 years of experience and works under general direction.

The Controls Technician is responsible for ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of automated and electrical control systems. This role involves installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing control equipment and instrumentation. A strong understanding of electrical circuits, control logic, instrumentation, and automation processes is essential. The technician works closely with engineers, maintenance teams, operators, and vendors to support safety, productivity, and continuous improvement. An associate degree in engineering, electronics, or a related technical field--or equivalent experience--is required. This position typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Key Responsibilities:



Install, configure, calibrate, and test control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, sensors, actuators, and related devices. Read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and technical documentation. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair control panels, wiring, and field devices to minimize downtime. Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on automated equipment and control systems. Program and modify PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and automation software per project requirements. Assist in the design and implementation of new automation projects and system modifications. Collaborate with engineers and project managers on system upgrades and process improvements. Ensure compliance with safety codes, standards, and company policies. Train operators and maintenance personnel on control systems and provide technical support. Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide after-hours support as needed. Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices in automation and controls. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:



Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, Industrial Maintenance, or related field; or equivalent experience. Preferred certifications in PLC programming or industrial controls (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley). 2-5 years' experience with control systems in industrial or commercial settings. Strong knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, and instrumentation. Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documents. Experience programming and troubleshooting automation platforms (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider Electric). Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.). Proficient with diagnostic tools like multimeters and oscilloscopes. Basic networking knowledge related to industrial control systems. Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams. Physical ability to climb ladders, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in various environments. Willingness to travel and work flexible hours, including occasional nights and weekends.

Work Environment:



Exposure to electrical hazards, moving machinery, and equipment. Noise levels requiring hearing protection. Variable conditions including vibration, heat, humidity, and cold. Occasional exposure to dust, insulation materials, and chemical coolants.
