Under general supervision of production control manager, evaluates and diagnoses automotive and trailer malfunctions and failures and supervises major repairs of automotive equipment. Supervises fifteen automotive mechanics (nine at grade M-10). Has the responsibility for the maintenance of over 224 pieces of equipment. Supervises shop operations in the absence of the production control manager.

Job Qualifications




High school education with major in mechanical arts or completion of a recognized trade school. Four years of specialized experience (one year in a supervisory capacity) in automotive/MHE mechanics to include qualifying experience in gas/diesel engine repair, and cargo trailer repair. Must be qualified in the use of gas and electric welding equipment. Must have qualifying experience in woodworking, sheet metal work, and lathe operation. Must be qualified in the use of engine diagnostic equipment, and a wide variety of automotive test equipment. Experience in excess of four years may be substituted for educational requirements on a nine-months-for-nine-months basis. Qualifying college-level education may be substituted for the required specialized experience.

Major Duties




Assists production controller by performing full supervision of all vehicle/maintenance personnel to include work plans, changes in procedures and sequence of work operations. Monitors initial and final maintenance inspection to ensure all work performed is required and quality is within industry standards. Diagnoses automotive malfunctions and/or failures. Explains repair requirements to mechanics. Performs and provides working direction to assigned automotive mechanics as follows:

A. Repair and rebuilding major gas/diesel automotive components and assemblies by fitting and installing needed parts such as rings, pistons, bearings and gears. B. Major engine repair, such as grinding valves, tuning engines, to include the repair of engine heads, (gas/diesel) replacing valves, overhauling carburetors and repairing ignition systems.

C. Major repair to trailers such as replacing landing gears, repairing nose rails, brakes, damaged body parts. D. Adjustments and major repair to all types of steering, transmissions and suspension systems. E. Repair and adjustment of brakes and brake mechanisms.

Supervises the operation of a lathe and grinding and seating equipment used to construct parts such as axles for floats, sleeves, bushings, spacers, threading, turning drums and caster wheels for forklifts. Responsible for maintaining a tool shop of specialized tools and maintain it in clean and orderly manner.

Resolves associate complaints, if possible, and refers unresolved problems to the production controller. Prepares job performance reviews for assigned employees.

Enforces applicable fire, safety and security regulations. Maintains shop security of fixed assets, equipment and mechanic tools. Keeps abreast of, actively supports and as required, implements the provision of pertinent public laws, executive orders and directives relating to the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) program within the Army & Air Force Exchange Service.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Challenges




Physical Effort: Stands, stoops, bends, stretches and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.



Working Conditions: Work is usually done inside where it is drafty and noisy, and fumes are present. Stands on hard surfaces for long periods of time. May work outside in bad weather. Dirt, dust and grease are always present. Exposure to cuts, bruises, shock, burns and strains. Vehicle fluids may cause burns or irritable skin.
