GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is an agency committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. It is currently seeking a Design Assistant for the Laramie Design Team.

The purpose of the Laramie Design Team is to provide a work-study program for undergraduate engineering students interested in continuing their education while simultaneously working part-time on a highway design team. Students in the Design Team are provided with training in highway design\'s fundamental principles and techniques and with actual design experience. They are encouraged to continue their employment with the Wyoming Department of Transportation upon graduation.

This is a part-time position with flexible work hours of 20-40 hours per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Prepares plan drawings and details for highway construction plans utilizing computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software
  • Learns to use the current WYDOT CADD software, WYDOT procedures, and basic drafting requirements to produce drawings and details with extensive formal and on-the-job training
  • Prints and reproduces plan drawings, as required for distribution and peer review
  • Researches As-Constructed Plans
  • Maintains a filing system within the work area for all project plans
  • Incorporates some summary work as required to help a designer meet a project deadline
  • Participates in training on various computer software related to performing this function
  • Maintains familiarization with department policies and procedures relative to drafting or roadway plans and other areas in general
  • Identifies and resolves problems by gathering or reviewing information gathered by others, analyzing and resolving the problem, or recommending the supervisor\'s solution
Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to those students with a minimum of 30 semester hours in the field of engineering.

**The offer of employment to the selected candidate is contingent upon full-time enrollment in the College of Engineering at the University of Wyoming for the Fall 2023 Semester.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of basic math, reading, and writing.
  • Knowledge of communication and time management.
  • Knowledge of applying drafting skills in developing plan detail sheet(s) will eventually be compiled to complete a set of contract document plans.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time.
  • May work in adverse environmental conditions.
  • May work in close proximity to high-speed traffic.

  • Design Squad students are required to be full-time students (at least 12 hours of coursework) during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Design Squads students are not required to take any courses during the summer term but may take summer classes if they wish to do so.
  • Design Squad students are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25.
  • After starting in the Design Squad, students are required to work year-round, including summers, for at least 80 hours in the calendar month.
  • You must also submit a personal resume, transcripts of relevant course work, letter(s) of recommendation, and a personal statement (at least 1/2 page long) stating why the candidate is interested in the Design Squad and including an anticipated graduation date to the Design Team Leader at the following mailing or email address, or attached to the online application
