GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is hiring 4 field technicians to conduct statewide camera trap surveys for swift fox. Positions will last from 15 August through 15 December 2023. Successful candidates will be responsible for contacting landowners and land managers for access, deploying remote cameras, and compiling and analyzing photos. Objectives of the project are to: 1) estimate current statewide occupancy, 2) compare current occupancy estimates with previous survey efforts to evaluate population trends, 3) update statewide distribution and range maps, and 4) determine and evaluate the impact of anthropogenic disturbance on swift fox occupancy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Contact and coordinate with landowners, land managers, and other Department personnel for permission and access to conduct surveys
  • Follow approved protocols to deploy remote cameras in suitable habitats for swift fox
  • Assist with similar remote camera surveys as time allows
  • Compile and analyze photos, including species identification
  • Collect, enter, and proof data with close attention to detail
  • Organize, maintain, and repair field equipment and vehicles
Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference will be given to those with a high school degree plus 2 years of experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or habitat development OR 2 years of college coursework towards a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management or a closely related field.

**Agency requires that the successful applicant must have a valid driver\'s license.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of species identification of Wyoming wildlife, particularly from photos
  • Experience working in the field, conducting surveys, and collecting field data
  • Good communication skills and willingness to communicate and coordinate with landowners and land managers
  • Excellent navigation skills, including the use of GPS units and maps, and experience with using 4-wheel drive vehicles off maintained roads
  • Excellent decision-making ability, oral and written communication skills, and organizational and time-management skills
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, good interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Must be able and willing to safely travel and conduct field surveys in remote conditions and potentially under adverse weather conditions
  • Must be willing to work irregular hours, including split schedules, early mornings, and weekends
  • Must be able to hike while carrying cumbersome equipment, occasionally in rugged terrain
  • Must be willing to perform extensive travel across the state in Department vehicles, including extensive travel off maintained roads
NOTES:
  • FLSA: Non-exempt
  • Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to the appointment.
  • Necessary field equipment including field vehicles and groceries/housing while in the field will be provided. Housing in Casper will not be provided. Employees may be asked to utilize hotels while performing fieldwork, which will involve paying for hotel rooms at the time of use and receiving reimbursement later.
