OUR UNIVERSITY Ottawa University (established in 1865), one of the oldest private liberal arts universities in the United States, is a multi-campus system serving approximately 4000 students through its campuses in Kansas (Ottawa, Kansas- Residential Campus and Overland Park, Kansas- Adult Programs); Arizona (Surprise Residential Campus and OUAZ Adult Programs); Wisconsin (Brookfield Adult Programs); and our OU ONLINE PROGRAM based out of Overland Park, Kansas. JOB SUMMARY Responsible for performing all facets of the sports medicine program and the operation of the athletic training room. Works with student-athletes in all sports toward prevention, care, and rehabilitation of all athletic related injuries. Position requires a high level of interaction with varied groups, individual judgment and discretion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (provide list of items which are essential to effective outcomes in this role):

  • Regular and effective prevention and care of athletic injury and illness. Support the implementation of the athletic training program working closely with the director, athletic administration, coaches, faculty, staff, and students associated with the athletic training program.
  • Provide coverage at all home athletic events, practices and appropriate away events; work effectively with full-time staff and part-time work study student-trainers & scholarship student-trainers; maintain and build working relationships with appropriate doctors and medical facilities.
  • Evaluate injuries of student-athletes; administer proper care and/or referral to medical personnel; recommend training regimens for athletes; determine an appropriate timeframe for an athlete to return to competitive practices and effectively communicate that plan with the coaches and student-athletes.
  • Oversee the monitoring and care of the athletics training room, equipment, and inventory housed there.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and record keeping.
  • Maintain the system of daily records of assessments, treatments, and rehabilitation on all athletes with guaranteed confidentiality according to FERPA, HIPPA, and others that apply.
  • Responsible for athletic insurance related recordkeeping and communications.
  • Coordinate NAIA Drug Education policies and procedures with staff and student-athletes
  • Stay current with certification, and the most current athletic training practices and procedures that are pertinent to the evaluation, care and rehabilitation of injuries.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high degree of confidentiality with student-athletes and medical matters including, but not limited to HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned
