Position Summary
The Athletic Coordinator is responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, and supervision of youth and adult athletic programs and leagues offered through Sylacauga Parks and Recreation. This position ensures the effective delivery of high-quality recreational sports opportunities that promote community engagement, sportsmanship, and physical well-being for participants of all ages. The Athletic Coordinator also assists in scheduling facilities, managing staff and volunteers, maintaining records, and collaborating with schools, local organizations, and city departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, implement, and oversee a variety of athletic programs, leagues, tournaments, and special events for youth and adults.
Maintain sports fields and courts in conjunction with the athletics staff and prepare them for games and events of the current season.
Maintain sports complex and sports courts in conjunction with the athletics staff during the off season to ensure they are always in premiere shape.
Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise part-time staff, officials, scorekeepers, and volunteers involved in athletic programs.
Coordinate team registrations, rosters, schedules, standings, and communications with coaches, parents, and participants.
Ensure all programs and facilities comply with city, state, and national safety standards and league rules.
Maintain effective communication with local schools, community organizations, and athletic associations.
Assist in marketing athletic programs through flyers, social media, website updates, and public announcements.
Develop and manage program budgets, including tracking revenues, expenses, and participation numbers.
Inspect athletic fields, courts, and facilities regularly to ensure safety, cleanliness, and readiness for play, coordinate with maintenance staff for necessary repairs or improvements.
Handle program-related customer inquiries, concerns, and incident reports professionally and promptly.
Recommend and assist in the development of new athletic programs and facility improvements based on community needs.
Maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to participation, finances, and program evaluations.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Parks and Recreation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of rules, techniques, and administration of multiple sports (e.g., baseball, softball, basketball, football, soccer, volleyball).
Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working effectively with staff, participants, and the public.
Ability to recruit, train, and supervise part-time employees and volunteers.
Knowledge in program planning, budgeting, and evaluation.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed for athletic events.
Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office, recreation management software, and social media platforms.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Physical Education, Sports Administration, or a related field preferred. Five (5) or more years of experience in recreation or athletic program coordination; municipal or parks and recreation experience is acceptable.
Experience supervising staff or volunteers is strongly preferred.
Valid Alabama driver's license and the ability to pass a background check required.
CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within six months of employment).
Working Conditions
Work is performed in both office and outdoor environments.
Must be able to work evenings and weekends and some holidays as required by program schedules and events.
Moderate physical activity including maintaining fields, setting up equipment, and lifting to 50 lbs.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range: AO-7 starting salary of $43,888.
Full benefits package including health insurance, retirement, vacation, and sick leave, as provided by the City of Sylacauga.
