Description:

The Assistant Vice President of Communications (AVPC) is responsible for the leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC\'s (PPMW) communications. The Assistant Vice President of Communications (AVPC) crafts and tells Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC\'s (PPMW)\'s story to build external relationships with the organization\'s stakeholders, including funders, legislators, traditional media, and key influencers. With a heavy emphasis on brand management, the AVP designs and implements an integrated omnichannel strategy that unifies tactics across all departments and initiatives including Planned Parenthood Advocates for DC, Maryland, & NoVa (PPADMV).

The goal is to advance the organization\'s position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support. The AVP reports to the Chief Revenue Development and Communications Officer and works in tandem with the Vice President of Development and manages a 1-2 member staff. Requirements:

Communications Strategy, Vision, and Leadership

  • Design and implement an integrated omnichannel strategic communications plan to advance PPMW and PPADMV\'s brand identity, increase program engagement and priorities, and support fundraising success.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues. Work cross-functionally with staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Serve as communications counselor to CEO, executive team, and volunteers.
  • Create and implement media relations strategy.
  • Design and implement crisis communications plan. Leads response plan and identifies proper spokesperson crisis communications and issues management.
  • Internal expert of communications content for PPMW and PPADMV, including through keeping up-to-date on federation-wide messaging and staying informed of all relevant aspects of political and legislative issues as they pertain to reproductive rights.
  • Provide strategic guidance and execute approval of all agency communications, including but not limited to internal and external newsletters, volunteer communications, press materials, digital campaigns, and other collateral produced by the Communications team.
  • Supervise member(s) of the Communications team.
  • Oversee management of vendors and independent contractors, including photographers, videographers, online marketing consultants and web developers.
  • Ensure all communications are in alignment with PPMW and PPADMV\'s values of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Other communications responsibilities, as assigned.
Content Creation
  • Create, collect, synthesize, and produce unique content across platforms to meet business objectives and engage target audiences.
  • Write speeches, drafts blogs, draft editorial pitches, scripts, for CEO and collaborates with other executive team members as content opportunities arise.
  • Produce or manage visual media efforts including videos, photo shoots, podcasts, etc.
  • Leverage PPMW volunteer networks and stakeholders to identify storytellers, those who can be interviewed by media, and speak on behalf of PPMW at events.
Media Relations
  • Build relationships with reporters so that PPMW is the go-to source for reproductive health issues.
  • Pitch traditional media and other platforms such as podcasts.
  • Serve as key staff contact for all media inquiries.
  • Set up and attend press conferences and other events.
  • Lead rapid response team to respond timely to breaking news.
  • Prepare CEO or other spokespeople for media opportunities.
  • Craft and maintain bite book.
  • Serves as PPMW external presence at events that offer networking opportunities
Digital Strategy
  • Optimize SEO.
  • Maintain website content consistent with the editorial calendar.
  • Lead integration of digital outreach efforts across departments.
  • Manage vendors, and liaise with UX, web, and other digital departments at national conference.
  • Establish and monitor stakeholder digital journeys to maximize engagement and fundraising.
Communications Operations
  • Maintain and continually update key message architecture and story bank.
  • Oversee organization-wide editorial calendar that includes all channels: website, social media, earned media, events, collateral, newsletters, donor solicitations and stewardship.
  • Stay informed on federation-wide messaging and all relevant aspects of political and legislative issues as they pertain to reproductive rights.
  • Write and/or approve copy for all earned media, including articles for publication, press releases, press conferences, media advisories, letters-to-the-editor, and opinion editorials.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs for communications efforts, analyze and report of digital campaigns.
  • Create briefing documents for key executives in advance of events as needed.
  • Ensure all communications meet brand and DEI guidelines.
Team Development
  • Recruit and manage a communications team to support the development and execution of the communications strategy.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality and DEI.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.
Qualifications:
  • B.A. in Communications, Public Policy, Gender/Sexuality Studies or related field or equivalent communications experience in a professional capacity. Masters preferred.
  • Minimum 8-10 years progressively responsible experience in communications, media/journalism, and/or public relations, preferably in progressive advocacy and/or health care, including management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic communications plans targeting multiple stakeholder audiences and leveraging traditional, digital, and social media platforms. mass communications campaigns.
