Job Description


Assistant principal will work with other school administrators to ensure a safe, positive, school culture that promotes the growth and development of every student. The assistant principal position shares responsibility for all aspects of the middle school administration.

Essential Functions

Assists the principal in the overall operation of the school

Communicates with staff and parents in the promotion and enforcement of student discipline policies

Assists in supervising all school events including music concerts, etc

Supervises record keeping of health exams and immunization reports

Assists with preparing and updating Student Handbook

Supervises students in all areas of the school building and on school grounds

Assists in evaluations of certified and non-certified staff members as assigned

Assigns and supervises teacher supervision duties

Assists with supervision of playground supervisors and lunch supervision

Assumes responsibility for the operation of the school in the absence of the principal

Represents the school at designated events and functions

Assists with morning arrival and afternoon dismissal

Assists in curriculum development efforts in conjunction with school improvement and district guidelines in an effort to improve instruction

Provides leadership in developing and maintaining standards of student conduct

Assists in the hiring process of new employees

Assists principal in planning and developing professional growth activities

Supervises student discipline and attendance and follows up for action. Talks with and disciplines students in cases of attendance and behavior problems

Assists in facilitating the RTI team and processes

Assists in facilitating the Building Leadership Team and processes

Maintains open communication with staff, students, parents and the community

Gives individual and group guidance for personal problems, and educational objectives

Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations

Visible within the school

Assist with the management of student assessment programs, materials, schedules, and results

Participates in the preparation of master schedule

Attends district functions, meetings and committees as directed

Walks about school building and property to monitor safety and security or directs and coordinates teacher supervision of areas such as halls and cafeteria

Protects the health and welfare of students at all times

Qualifications:

Illinois General Administrative Endorsement required

Skills in interpersonal supervision

Previous administrative experience preferred

Elementary and/or middle school teaching experience

Understands the K-8 child and his or her developmental needs

Understands and advocates for the individual learning needs for all students

Knowledgeable of applicable state and federal school law

Experienced in implementing 21st century learning skills

Possesses excellent communication skills, especially interpersonal communication and conflict resolution

Skilled at planning, organization, especially budgeting and facility management

Embraces lifelong learning and serves as a model for professional development for staff

Works well with school community, understanding balance between stakeholder requests and school resources

Skilled facilitator and problem solver

Skilled at making data-driven decisions

Utilizes technologically to enhance instruction

Student centered, visible, approachable and enthusiastic.

Clearly sets and communicates direction

Proactive and flexible, able to make difficult decisions

Able to establish, promote and sustain a collaborative, team-centered environment

Serves as a guide and mentor, providing constructive feedback and capitalizing upon individual strengths

Able to apply student discipline in a fair and balanced manner, in accordance with the student handbook

Mental Demands: calculating, comparing, evaluation, interpreting, organizing, consulting, analyzing, planning, documenting, specifying, coordinating, implementing, and presenting

Physical Demands: bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting for prolonged periods of time, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity

Environmental Conditions: The work is performed primarily indoors; however, outside work is required on occasion. Travel between buildings will be a requirement
