General Summary

The Aquatic Specialist is responsible for overall facility maintenance and the safety of individuals using the pool area. This position performs a variety of duties related to the operation and management of City indoor and outdoor pools, including the general supervision of staff. This position works a regular full-time schedule year-round and requires the ability to work varied hours including mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Aquatic Specialist responsibility\'s, include, but are not limited to, guarding, pool maintenance, daily supervision of aquatic staff, and facilitation and operating of the seasonal outdoor water park. The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service skills, be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and have a strong commitment to safety. They should also have experience working with diverse groups of people and be able to work effectively as part of a team. Essential Functions

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
  • Assist in the management of the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities.
  • Complete daily safety checks of pool equipment and the surrounding pool area.
  • Maintain standards of safety and sanitation in compliance with all regulations, policies, and guidelines of the aquatic center
  • Assist the Aquatics Coordinator - Operations in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluation of staff.
  • Plan, implement, and enforce lifeguard rotations and schedules.
  • Assumes the duties of a lifeguard and/or swim instructor when necessary, guarding the pool area, teaching swim lessons, and preventing accidents by enforcing safety rules, policies, and regulations of the facility.
  • Deal with difficult, uncomfortable, and elevated situations in a professional manner and communicate the situation to the Aquatics Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Conduct emergency drills and evaluations of staff on a regular basis; conduct safety checks of equipment; enforce policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct of pool patrons; act as a problem solver to patrons.
  • Complete and maintain a variety of reports, forms, files, and other records as required in an accurate and timely manner, i.e., daily records of water chemistry, attendance, maintenance, and cleaning.
  • Completion and direction of routine maintenance of pool area; monitor and maintain water chemistry to state codes; supervise cash control from admissions and concessions.
  • Conduct daily walk-through of the facility to ensure appropriate appearance; document needed repairs and maintenance; maintain an accurate inventory of first-aid, chemical, operating, and program supplies; assist Recreation Supervisor with the purchase of necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Create a positive experience by building relationships with customers and staff and by providing quality seamless customer service to all.
  • Perform related work as required and assigned.
Typical Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE: Pool mechanics, chemistry, and routine maintenance; swim instruction philosophies and methods for swim instruction; lifeguarding methods and techniques; aquatic safety and accident prevention; principles and practices of supervision, training, and evaluation.
SKILL: Preparing written reports and projects; in operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.
ABILITY: Analyze mechanical pool problems and make minor repairs; perform routine mechanical and chemical pool maintenance; identify and correct facility safety hazards; supervise, train and evaluate subordinates; work under minimal supervision; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and patrons; use good judgment and make sound decisions in stressful or emergency situations; deal tactfully with public; accurately complete a variety of forms, logs and reports; work in a highly visible work environment; sufficient strength to make rescues and lift 50 lbs. TRAINING: High School Diploma or equivalent. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR, First Aid required. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor and Certified Pool Operator desirable.
EXPERIENCE: Previous supervisory experience in aquatics; previous pool maintenance experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
