The Animal Care Specialist is responsible for the daily care, sanitation, and enrichment of shelter animals. This role ensures animals are healthy, comfortable, and ready for adoption, while supporting the shelter's operations and maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety, and professionalism. The ACS works collaboratively with staff and volunteers to achieve organizational goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB INCLUDE:
Animal Care & Wellbeing
Provide daily food, water, bedding, toys, and enrichment for all shelter animals.
Ensure all animals receive exercise, walks, playtime, and socialization.
Observe and report any health or behavior concerns; assist with medical care when needed.
Bathe, groom, and maintain a clean, attractive appearance for adoptable animals.
Ensure animals are public-ready, with proper identification (collars/harnesses) and clean kennels.
Sanitation & Facility Maintenance
Clean and disinfect indoor/outdoor kennels, floors, litter boxes, pet dishes, and carriers.
Maintain grooming room, laundry, and storage areas in a clean and organized state.
Restock supplies and monitor food and inventory needs.
Empty trash and recycling, and process donated items to proper locations.
Shelter Operations Support
Perform daily walk-throughs to assess animal welfare and facility conditions.
Ensure accurate and timely signage updates on kennels.
Transition animals from impound to adoptable status and monitor post-surgery recovery.
Assist with animal transport to/from veterinary appointments as needed.
Other Duties/Functions
Model humane treatment of animals and professional conduct at all times, on and off the job.
Participate in team meetings and contribute to improving shelter practices and animal wellbeing.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:
Required
Must be detailed oriented, accurate and dependable.
Able to juggle demands, prioritize thoughtfully, and follow tasks through to timely completion.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), good computer skills to include word processing, 10 key calculator, data programs, and the ability to use a digital camera.
Must maintain a high level of confidentiality and have tactful, mature, and sincere attitude.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
