Zoo Seasonal Horticulture Worker (Spring/Summer)
Department: Zoo
(Seasonal)
Hourly Pay Range: $9.75 - 18.05

Job Summary: Work with full-time Horticulture staff to maintain and preserve the horticultural and botanical facilities using sound horticultural practices. Educates visitors, preserves and enhances department assets, ensures quality service and product delivery. All of these duties add value to the guest experience at the Milwaukee County Zoo.

Job Responsibilities

  • Flower and Shrub Bed Maintenance - Plant, weed, mulch, water, trim, fertilize, and maintain annual, perennial, and shrub beds throughout the Zoo grounds.
  • Turf Maintenance - Prepare and seed new and renovated turf locations. Water, fertilize, aerate, mow and weed whip as needed.
  • Landscaping - Operate small engine equipment. Perform invasive plant removal. Assist in preparation and installation of new and renovated planting areas.
  • Pest, disease, and weed control \xe2\x80\x93 Monitor for and under general direction apply control methods for insect pests, plant disease, and nuisance weeds in the landscape.
  • Assist Zoo Forestry Crew with tree planting, watering, pruning, mulching, propagation, and disease and insect pest control. Assist with brush removal and preparation of planting sites and with maintenance in tree nursery. Assist with urban woodworking projects.
  • Event Setup - Horticulture staff assist with holiday and special event set ups including lighted and seasonal decorations in indoor and outdoor locations.
  • Grounds Maintenance \xe2\x80\x93 Assist with seasonal maintenance of Zoo grounds including snow removal, leaf removal, garbage and liter removal.
  • Miscellaneous - Assists other departments and staff with their duties. Provides information, directions and assistance to Zoo visitors.
  • Ability to safely and properly operate golf carts, box trucks, pick-up trucks, utility vehicles, pruners, shovels, tillers, aerators, snow blowers, snow plows, rakes, and a variety of hand tools specific to landscaping.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; ability to push and pull up to 75 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Education, License/Certification and Experience
  • Eligible applicants must be at least 16 years of age or older upon application
  • Basic computer knowledge preferred
  • Valid Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License preferred
  • Previous horticulture experience preferred
  • Previous pesticide applicator experience preferred
  • Previous landscaping experience preferred
