JOB SUMMARY



This position coordinates youth programs and services for the Library



MAJOR DUTIES



Organizes and executes programs and events for youth, including early literacy, story time, sensory, afterschool, outreach, summer learning, and other special programs.


Oversees the summer learning program, including scheduling guest performers.


Coordinates with branch staff to schedule, review, and prioritizes projects and ongoing department initiatives.


Assists with technology implementation, instruction, and planning related to youth services.


Acts as liaison with other community agencies serving youth to promote library services, programs, and resources.


Assists the Program Outreach Manager with the development of collaborative programs and partnerships with schools and other community organizations serving youth; works with schools to align outreach programs and services with learning outcomes and objectives.


Designs and executes programs and services that promote early literacy, including support for caregivers.


Assists and instructs children and adults in the use of library services and resources; conducts library tours for children, including school visits.


Assists with the development and maintenance of youth print and non-print collections.


Helps prepare promotional materials, including flyers, brochures, newsletters, and press releases.


Keeps informed of trends in children's literature, library services, and issues affecting youth.


Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports.


Participates in short- and long-range department planning, including budget forecasting.


Participates in recruiting, interviewing, training, scheduling, and evaluating youth services staff.


Develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, priorities, and performance standards as part of the library management team.


Researches, coordinates, and writes grant proposals for special projects; maintains accurate accounting records of grant funding expenditures; prepares related reports.


Performs related duties.

Knowledge of computers, printers, and job-related software including integrated library systems.


Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.


Skill in program development and implementation.


Skill in the training and supervision of personnel.


Skill in the organization and maintenance of paper/electronic files.


Skill in interpersonal and public relations.


Skill in the use of such office equipment as a computer, scanner, fax machine, and copier.


Skill in compiling information and preparing reports.


Skill in operating a vehicle.


Skill in multimedia applications, mobile technology, and standard application software.


Skill in oral and written communication.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS



The Library Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.



GUIDELINES



Guidelines include county and library policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.



COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK



The work consists of varied program coordination duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position.


The purpose of this position is to coordinate the provision of youth services to library patrons. Successful performance in this position assures the effective and efficient delivery of services to those patrons.


CONTACTS



Contacts are typically with coworkers, other county employees, patrons, vendors, school personnel, librarians from other libraries, performers and program providers, and members of the general public.


Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate persons.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT



The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.


The work is typically performed in a library.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY



This position has d supervision over assigned Library Assistants.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Master of Library Science degree preferred.


Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years' experience or service.


Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
