Job Summary: Noxious weeds are a growing problem in Montana. Fortunately, we have ways of managing these weeds: bio-control insects! Every summer the Weed District hires a youth crew to collect and relocate insects to help manage Montana\xe2\x80\x99s problematic noxious weeds. This program teaches about the importance of responsible stewardship while providing an outdoor summer job experience.
The youth crew participates in: bug collection, monitoring and data collecting, redistributing bio control to landowners, weed pulls and other community projects, native garden planting, maintenance and selling plants from the green house. Students interested in ecology, wildlife biology, or natural resource conservation may be well suited to this team. We focus on noxious weed management, but work with several agencies in the Bitterroot Valley to be part of other environmental projects. Past projects include: working at boat check stations, assisting with rehabilitation efforts on the Sawtooth burn area, weed mapping, bird banding, working in educational booths located around the valley and at the county fair and aquatic monitoring. Special projects change yearly.
As a crew member you will work alongside other members and report to the Crew Leader and the Weed District Coordinator. You are responsible for providing your own transportation to and from the Weed Department, which is located in Victor. Part of this job is to grow native plants in the greenhouse and plant the native plants in key restoration areas across Ravalli County.

Essential Functions:

• Performs all assigned duties.
• 14.5 to 18 years old and currently enrolled in high school.
• Interest in pursuing a career in biology, ecology, natural resource conservation or related fields
• Willingness to learn new biology and technology.
• Familiarity with the outdoors
• Ability to work long hours in hot, summer conditions
• Ability to hike 5 \xe2\x80\x93 10 miles in a day
• Ability to handle non-threatening insects
• Ability to work well in a team environment
• Flexible summer schedule
• Can provide their own daily transportation to/from the Victor office, program leader will be driving employees to job sites
• Some travel will take place outside of Ravalli County and overnight trips for education and collection opportunities will be required.

Required Education and Experience:

• Must be currently enrolled in high school.
• Must be physically able to effectively perform all position requirements in steep, uneven or unstable terrain.

Work Environment: Outdoors in the summer elements of high temperatures while traveling to various sites.
