This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Senior Aquatics Director and the Falcons Head Coach, the YMCA Falcons Assistant Swim Team Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach with the planning, organization, and instruction of the introductory preswim team and non-USA swimming athletes (Eagles program for participants (typically 5-15 years of age). This role is vital for developing basic swim skills, endurance, and water safety, preparing children for a competitive swim team or advanced aquatic programs. Additionally, the role includes required Deck Supervisor responsibilities, focusing on providing shift coverage, ensuring aquatic safety protocols, and supporting the daily operational needs of the pool deck. In accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements:#

A. Preswim Coaching & Instruction



Assists with designing and implementing effective practice plans and workouts focused on fundamental stroke mechanics, water safety, and endurance for the preswim level. Instructs and demonstrates proper swimming techniques to participants of various skill levels in a positive and encouraging environment. Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and parents to answer program questions and provide constructive feedback on progress. Assists with setting up and taking down necessary practice equipment (lanes, kickboards, etc.). May act as the lead instructor in the Head Coach's absence.

B. Deck Supervision & Safety



Provides required shift supervision on the pool deck, supporting the daily operations of all aquatic programs and helping maintain a welcoming environment. Ensures all possible safety measures are observed by program participants, members, and staff; identifies and immediately reports any facility hazards to the Aquatics Director. Responds immediately to emergencies as required; maintains and forwards accurate accident and incident reports to the supervisor. Models relationship-building and actively addresses member and community inquiries/concerns according to YMCA procedures. Contributes to staff training by demonstrating best practices in safety, communication, and member engagement during shifts.

C. Administrative & Compliance



Report any issues, concerns, or policy breaches to the Head Swim Coach and the Senior Director of Aquatics promptly. Attends all mandatory YMCA staff trainings and meetings. Complies with Bloomington-Normal YMCA rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

Licensing/Certification Requirements



Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (or equivalent) required upon employment or within 30 days of hire. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification required upon employment or within 30 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



Knowledge of the sport of swimming and fundamental stroke mechanics (non-USA Swimming focus). Skill in instructing and demonstrating swim skills to children of all abilities. Skill in performing CPR and First Aid activities; ability to react quickly and accurately in emergencies. Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public (parents, members). Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while providing effective shift coverage. Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations.

Necessary Skills and Qualifications

:

Requires one season of competitive or recreational swim experience or equivalent participation/coaching experience. Experience working with youth (ages 5-12) in a sports, recreation, or camp setting is preferred.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

:

Possession of Spanish language both written and spoken.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION AND REQUIRED TRAININGS & CERTIFICATIONS




The Bloomington-Normal YMCA adheres to the strictest regulations pertaining to Child Abuse Prevention and requires all staff and volunteers to complete Child Abuse Prevention Training at time of hire and on an annual basis. Other required trainings and certifications, provided by the YMCA during on-boarding or within the first 60 days of employment, include: Illinois Mandated Reporter Certification, Illinois Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Training, CPR/AED/First Aid certification, and OSHA training including Bloodborne Pathogens.
