WPD Dispatcher

Reports to: Chief of Police

Salary (Grade): D.O.E.

Status: Reg. Part-Time (Non-Exempt)

Job Purpose & Position Overview

Responsible for providing communications between the Tribal Police Offers, BIA Police Officers, Tribal Conservation Officers, State Troopers, other law enforcement personnel and agencies. May be required to work long irregular shifts, or weekends and at night, frequently changing shifts. Irregular tour of duty to cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Assignments are subject to change with little advance notice.

Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate the Winnebago Tribe\xe2\x80\x99s core mission, vision, and values.
  • Operate the police, state fire department ambulance, and citizens band radio net control at the police department.
  • Dispatch Tribal police officers, BIA officers, Tribal Conservation officers, Tribal Ambulance personnel, Volunteer Fire Department firefighters, and other emergency service personnel as needed to respond to reported incidents.
  • Record all calls for service and radio transmittals on a radio log.
  • Record all station activity such as phone calls and station entrances and exits on the station activity log.
  • Receive the public at the police station, records name (s) if requiring assistance and accepts reports and refers them to the appropriate personnel.
  • Receive telephone calls from the public, transmits message to appropriate personnel and dispatches officers by radio, telephone or in person to areas or locations where needed
  • Type all police reports on incidents occurring during his/her shift and completes/maintains all dispatch logs, before leaving job site at the end of his/her shift.
  • Utilize the SLUETH records management system or other approved department report system to complete the dispatch portion of incidents reports.
  • Will be required to attend all staff meetings and training as recommended by immediate supervisor
  • Computer data entry required for completing logs, reports, and teletype message.
  • Utilize the Nebraska NLETS NCIC telecommunications system (teletype) to run operator license and vehicle license plate status checks, driver histories, checks for wanted persons, criminal histories, enter stolen vehicles, missing persons, etc.
  • Maintain department warrant: pick orders, orders of protection, and restraining order files.
  • Record all juvenile and adult arrests in appropriate arrest log.
  • Record all towed and impounded vehicles in the appropriate tow log
  • Be subject to on call duty shift assignments.
  • Attend required company and departmental meetings.

Required Qualifications/Skills:
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain confidentiality as pertaining to law enforcement.
  • Ability to work with all segments of the service population.
  • Possess emotional stability, normal hearing and correctable vision and be free of a speech impediment.
  • Skilled in the use of communication equipment and able to learn quickly.
  • Skilled in the use of radio equipment and radio codes.
  • Ability to use good judgement when dispatching law enforcement personnel to the most critical area of need, as well as for the most efficient use.
  • Knowledge of the geographical area
  • Knowledge of tribal personnel policies and procedures.
  • Ability to type in a proficient manner-allowing the completion of reports and logs during one\xe2\x80\x99s duty shift.
  • Must be skilled in communication written and verbal: possessing a good command of the English language, as it pertains to grammar spelling and punctuation.
  • Must be able to work irregular work schedules including shift work, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to work with people of all ages.
  • Must possess the ability to use independent judgement
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screen.
  • Must have a valid Nebraska driver\xe2\x80\x99s license or Nebraska identification card.
Education Preference:
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. is preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • N/A
Training Requirements:
  • Must complete the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Centers Tele-Communicators Courses, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Tele-Communicators Courses, and other approved training courses within one year of hire.
  • Must carry certifications from Nebraska State Patrol for proven proficiency in the NLETS NCIC telecommunication systems within one year of hire.
  • Must become a Nebraska General Notary Public within 90 days of hire.
  • CPR certifications required within 90 days of hire.
Physical Requirements:
  • Normal to light office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10lbs.
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.
  • While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Near vision, glasses permitted, must be acute for the reading of material the size of type written characters.
  • The ability of the applicant to hear the conversational voice and whispered speech is required. Since the duties of this position are exacting, responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions.

Language Requirements:
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.
  • Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills.
Certificates, Licenses & registrations:
  • All applicants will comply with 45 CFR 1301, Subpart D, Section 1301.31, C and D, which require all prospective employees to sign a declaration prior to employment regarding all arrests and convictions of child abuse or violent felonies and to comply with PL 101-630 and PL 101-637 regarding criminal records check.
