Position Description
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Wood Pole Design Team. We are responsible for evaluating wood poles including minimum clearances, condition, and remaining strength. If pole replacement is needed, we design and put together work packages that comply with City Light Standards, and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). In some cases, a structural analysis will be required. We also support the Pole Replacement Program. We are looking for an energetic team member with an interest in learning new things and making a positive impact on our customers.
The Electrical Engineering Design Specialist, Assistant plays a critical role in evaluating and replacing poles to support the work of other groups within Seattle City Light. In this role, you will be responsible for performing detailed drafting and preparing maps, plans, schematics, and drawings of electrical features of distribution systems and services. You'll need a keen eye for detail and good learning skills to gain proficiency in electrical engineering principles, in addition to strong communication skills to ensure that projects are completed efficiently and effectively. This position reports to the Wood Pole Design Team Supervisor.

Job Responsibilities

  • Inspecting wood poles to evaluate for upcoming work
  • Engineering wood pole replacements and modifications
  • Drafting and work planning
  • Preparing work orders and instructions
  • Specifying construction standards & materials
  • Estimating hours and costs of projects
  • Supporting field work, to include visiting work sites, assessing progress and responding to inquiries from crews, contractors, & customers
  • Ensuring each pole meets City Light and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) standards
  • Using IKE4, SpidaCalc/Studio & CADD
Qualifications
In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:
Requires an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or two years college course work in electrical engineering; and two years' experience as an Electrical Engineering Specialist with a major public utility (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Work Environment/Physical Demands
Most work is performed in a normal city work/office environment. Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, high voltage energized equipment and work in or near construction sites. May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Overnight travel may be required.
License, Certification and Other Requirements
Current State of Washington driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
  • Two or more years' experience working with municipal permits and/or wood poles
  • Familiarity with overhead distribution design and construction practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, property descriptions, construction schedules and documents.
  • Familiarity with electric utility standards and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Practical understanding of physical systems typically gained through hands-on work experience with construction or maintenance.
  • Experience working both outdoors and in an office environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Additional Information
The full salary range for this position is $45.95 to $53.56 per hour.
