Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) - Withdrawal Management

Full-Time, Part-Time, (7a-7pm and 7pm-7am)

Medical Director and Program Director

Position Summary:



The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Withdrawal Management (Detox) unit provides skilled nursing care to individuals undergoing detoxification from alcohol and/or drugs. The RN is responsible for conducting comprehensive nursing assessments, administering medications, monitoring withdrawal symptoms, and ensuring patient safety and stabilization. This role is critical in delivering compassionate, trauma-informed care during the earliest phase of recovery.

Key Responsibilities:Clinical Duties:



Performs nursing assessments upon admission and throughout the detox process, identifying physical and mental health concerns. Administers withdrawal management medications (e.g., comfort meds, symptom relief, PRNs) per physician orders, documenting accurately in the medical record. Monitors and evaluates withdrawal symptoms using tools such as the CIWA-Ar and COWS; adjusts care and alerts the provider as needed. Obtains and records vital signs regularly, identifying changes that may require medical intervention. Observes patient behavior and condition, reporting significant findings or concerns to the Medical Director promptly. Assists with medical intakes and collaborates in developing individualized withdrawal stabilization plans. Coordinates and collects laboratory specimens, TB tests, and urine drug screens. Provides patient education regarding the withdrawal process, prescribed medications, and aftercare options. Supports continuity of care by communicating effectively with clinical, medical, and case management teams.

Administrative Duties:



Conducts daily medication counts and ensures proper documentation of all administered and stored medications. Maintains proper medication storage, labeling, and disposal protocols according to state and federal regulations. Verifies incoming medication shipments and communicates any discrepancies to the Program Director. Maintains accurate and confidential documentation in compliance with HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2. Ensures all required nursing documentation, including shift notes, assessments, and medication records, is complete and timely. Participates in shift handoffs, staff meetings, and care coordination meetings. Helps maintain a clean, organized, and trauma-sensitive withdrawal management unit.

Team & Compliance Responsibilities:



Collaborates with physicians, therapists, and case managers to provide holistic care. Supports readiness for CARF and state audits by maintaining nursing documentation and compliance with clinical procedures. Participates in ongoing staff training, quality assurance activities, and educational in-services. Adheres to all federal, state, and program-specific regulations and protocols governing withdrawal management and nursing care. Upholds the clinic's commitment to culturally responsive and patient-centered care.

Qualifications:



Education/Licensure:



Current, unencumbered RN license in the state of practice.

Experience:



Minimum of 1 year of direct nursing experience required. Experience in withdrawal management, addiction medicine, behavioral health, or emergency nursing strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



Strong understanding of detoxification protocols, withdrawal symptoms, and medical management of substance use disorders. Skilled in assessment, medication administration, crisis management, and trauma-informed care. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary treatment setting. Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and Microsoft Office. Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to respond calmly and effectively in medical or behavioral health emergencies.
