: Volunteer and Reentry Programs Assistant (Contract Educator)

DEPARTMENT

: Corrections Department, Reentry Division

WAGE

: Competitive, based on education and experience $50,648-$68,294.72 per

annum

WORK HOURS

: Variable eight hours per day scheduled at discretion of Reentry Division

GENERAL SUMMARY:



This position assists in planning, organizing, and enlisting the support of community partners to build a network of volunteers and community partnerships for the purpose of facilitating the successful programming and reentry of incarcerated citizens. The position is also responsible for assisting in the coordination of programs and services for incarcerated Native Americans, fostering and facilitating relationships with the community partners that would promote the success of the indigenous peoples during incarceration and upon reentry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

:

High School diploma, GED certification or equivalent

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

:

Experience working with criminal justice populations

6 months prior experience related to the position

Experience working with computer programs and data entry

WORK ENVIRONMENT

:

90% indoor - 10% outdoor. Work is done inside the perimeter of an adult prison environment and in a variety of settings in a correctional institution, and includes contact with inmates, sometimes one-on-one, and is potentially a very dangerous environment. Work is performed in an office and classroom setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer usage. Some travel may be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

:

Ensuring all volunteer applications are processed in a timely manner and are up to date statewide.

Assist in ensuring all facilities have religious representation and actives for all denominations.

Cooperate with the Facility Religious/Volunteer Coordinator, facility Chaplains, and other Reentry Division staff to maintain continuity and integrity of programs and services.

Assist in organizing, planning, implementing, and evaluating Native American programming and services at all public and private NMCD facilities.

Assist in locating and arranging for the retrieval of materials essential to Native American ceremonies in correctional facilities.

Recruit community-based support and spiritual advisors/volunteers.

Assist in evaluating reentry programs and services and prepare documents and reports.

Maintain effective communication with New Mexico's tribes, nations, and pueblos.

Develops and maintain a positive, collaborative relationship and regular communication with Reentry Division and other Central Office staff, facility administration, staff, incarcerated individuals, visitors and the general public.

Oversees the maintenance of accurate, complete and appropriate records, the preparation of reports as required by policy, regulations and procedure.

Uses verbal and written communication in an open, candid and consistent manner; explains concepts and procedures clearly and completely while maintaining attention and interest; displays sensitivity to the unique needs of NMCD's population.

Assist in instructing or training as necessary and appropriate.

Perform related duties as required and assigned in order to meet the needs and goals of the Reentry Division.

Timely and accurate record keeping, including maintenance of electronic forms and files on the volunteers as well as participants in programming.

Enforces institutional policies.

Follows all federal and state laws and regulations, Corrections Department rules, judicial decisions, and Reentry Division policies.

Performs other duties as required.

NMCD retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:



This position is designated as safety sensitive.

Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S and have reached the age of majority.

Willingness to work under potentially dangerous circumstances in a correctional facility and maintain strict fidelity to security protocols.

All of the above must be done in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
