Job Description


Summary: This position is open to those who live in or near Homer, Alaska. Responsibilities include responding to live and deceased marine mammal stranding calls in Homer and the surrounding areas. Volunteers activities will be performed under the direction of the Alaska SeaLife Center Wildlife Response Team, which is remotely based in Seward, Alaska and the Homer Volunteer Specialist, who is based in Homer. Education/Training Requirements: Must be able to read and write and be comfortable with cellular technologies. Interest or background in marine ecology and biology. Essential Duties:

  • The majority of the job duties involve collecting marine mammal carcasses and recording data according to existing protocol.

  • Respond to stranded marine mammals on local beaches. Responses are always under the remote direction of ASLC staff, and may include observing and photographing animals, posting signs, speaking with the public, rescuing and transporting live animals.

  • Report all observations and relevant information to the on-call ASLC staff member.

  • Attend volunteer meetings in Homer or complete periodical online training courses.

  • Commit to at least 12 hours per calendar year or the equivalent. All hours must be logged and reported to the ASLC Volunteer Coordinator.

  • Must be able to follow instructions over the phone.

  • Interact with the public in a professional manner when responding to strandings.

  • Comply with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Other Skills and Abilities: Responsible self-motivator who is able to work independently and accurately. Comfortable working with animal carcassess in various states of decay. Training will be provided regarding using proper equipment such as wearing gloves, using knives or scalpel blades, measuring tools and sample collection supplies. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and self-motivated. Maintain a valid Alaska driver s license. Living in or around Homer, Alaska is required. Ability to send and receive text messages and pictures is desirable. Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. This position requires working outside on the rocky, sandy beaches of Kachemak Bay. Ability to walk at least \xc2\xbd mile over sandy, rocky beaches. Ability to work outside in the weather extremes of Alaska for short periods. Ability to lift and move 50 pounds unassisted. A good sense of balance. Ability to see and hear; stand and walk; stoop, kneel, and crouch; use arms and hands; handle objects, tools, and controls; and sit.
