The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an experienced and dedicated professional as its next Vice President for Academics. This individual will lead GSSM's academic mission by providing strategic oversight of the institution's academic programs and by developing and implementing programs and policies that define curriculum content to meet institutional goals and objectives. Reporting directly to the President and serving as a member of the executive leadership team, the Vice President oversees over 50 employees and works collaboratively with internal and external constituencies to develop a robust academic program plan that supports GSSM's strategic plan goals and the overall quality of its educational program.
This is a permanent, full-time position in Hartsville, South Carolina, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. The salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.
Located in Hartsville, SC, GSSM is a statewide, public tuition-free residential high school for 11th and 12th graders specializing in the advanced study of science, mathematics and engineering.

The Vice President for Residential/Virtual Academics serves as the Chief Academic Officer for GSSM's Residential/Virtual programs. This executive role provides visionary leadership and strategic oversight of Residential/Virtual curriculum development, faculty and staff management, academic policy, and student academic support. The Vice President for Residential/Virtual Academics oversees and manages the student learning and teaching in for- credit courses and provides leadership to faculty. The Vice President ensures the delivery of a rigorous and innovative STEM-focused academic experience aligned with GSSM's mission and institutional goals.
Responsibilities of the Vice President for Academics
Residential/Virtual Academic Program Leadership and Curriculum Oversight:
Direct the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Residential/Virtual Academic Program. Supervise Residential department chairs, the Curriculum Committee, the Registrar's Office, the Virtual Program Manager and College Counseling and Advising. Oversee the development, assessment, and integrity of the Residential/Virtual academic curriculum, including the Interim program, dual enrollment, and Virtual SC participation. Ensure alignment of course offerings with instructional goals, scheduling needs, and student outcomes.
Divisional Management:
Lead the hiring, assignment, onboarding, and evaluation of Residential/Virtual instructors, including adjuncts. Ensure employee performance evaluations are completed and support employee professional development. Maintain records of instructional qualifications and stipends. Provide administrative leadership in developing the academic calendar and ensuring divisional communications.
Strategic Planning, Policy, and Reporting:
Review and maintain the Residential/Virtual academic policy sections of the student and employee handbooks. Collaborate with institutional leaders to align Residential/Virtual Academics with broader strategic goals. Prepare Residential/Virtual Academic reports for the Board of Trustees, state agencies, and other stakeholders. Develop and maintain higher education partnerships and represent GSSM in selected Outreach initiatives.
Instructional Innovation and Teaching:
Promote innovative and effective teaching methodologies within the Residential/Virtual program. Teach courses periodically, as appropriate, and serve as a model for instructional excellence. Guide Residential/Virtual faculty in pedagogical improvement and the integration of research-based instructional practices.
Student Advising and Academic Support:
Oversee the Residential/Virtual academic advising program. Collaborate with staff, counselors, and families to resolve academic concerns and support Residential/Virtual students' success. Enforce academic integrity policies and oversee Residential/Virtual student academic.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

An advanced degree (master's or PhD) in science, math, or related field.
At least five years of secondary or higher education administrative experience.
Training and/or at least five years of experience in staff/faculty development, leadership development, instructional design, or school improvement.
