Job Description

The Surgery Technician provides consistent, effective and timely support for the staff Surgeons and Anesthesiologist, and Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT). The candidate will work closely with surgery patients, emergency patients, and other hospital staff members.

The surgery technician is responsible for providing the highest quality nursing care as directed by the staff veterinarians and veterinary technicians, by providing appropriate animal restraint, setting up operating suites, closing the operating suites and sterile department, patient handling, housekeeping tasks of the surgical space and patient kennels, and most importantly can understand delegated tasks to be performed with efficiency and upmost accuracy.

Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment while maintaining composure and professional demeanor Ability to work well with others maintaining a cordial, supportive and collaborative environment Ability to safely restrain, lift, and transport canine and feline patients Willingness to practice all the necessary measures to prevent zoonotic and patient-to-patient disease transmission in the work place: Wear exam gloves when handling and treating patients whenever possible Avoid using the mouth as an aid in handling medical items (needle caps etc.) Mastery and/or willingness to learn basic computer systems including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook as well as veterinary-based software systems and electronic record keeping Ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain a professional demeanor via phone and in-person Ability to obtain and record accurate patient information including but not limited to signalment, health history, medication regimens and basic vital parameters Keep clients up to date on their pet's status while in the care of the Surgery team and inform clients on care plans, financial costs, and policies. Ability and willingness to communicate any work-related concerns directly to the Specialty Technician Supervisor in a timely manner Willingness to be cross-trained in surgery and anesthesia and to flexibly help in both areas as needed Consult staff veterinarians when noticing drug dose errors or inconsistencies, or when unclear about treatment instructions
General Duties

Every staff member, regardless of his/her specific employment role, is expected to contribute to keeping the common work areas and break rooms safe, clean, tidy and sightly for patients, clients, and all staff members, including the use of PPE when indicated. Especially during very busy days and when the janitorial service is not immediately available:

Clean whatever is left dirty (floors, countertops, sinks, medical equipment etc.) in the surgical space and surgical areas Empty trash bins when they are full and before being overfilled Sweep the floor when hair, debris etc. are scattered Store instruments back to their proper location after using them and when they are found out of place Restock disposables (syringes, needles, gauzes, gloves, cleaning supplies etc.) when noticing that they are running short Replace sharp containers when they are full Immediately report broken or malfunctioning equipment so that it can be promptly fixed Date every single bottle of any drug or lavage that has been opened Remove and properly dispose of out-of-date drug bottles Notify the inventory personnel when noticing that drug and disposable supply stock is low
Specific Job Duties

Perform and assist in procedures in the areas of Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging and Anesthesia Maintain and ensure patient comfort and cleanliness both preemptively and actively throughout the hospitalization period Administer high quality patient care through timely monitoring and completion of treatments as directed by staff veterinarians Immediately report change in patient condition to staff veterinarians Prepare the operating room and anesthesia induction room in a timely manner for the scheduled procedures Follow the daily and weekly check lists provided by the surgery and anesthesia service in order to maintain at all times the required standards of cleanliness, tidiness, equipment functionality, surgical and disposable item stocking level required for a professional and efficient workflow Accurately calculate and administer medications based on prescribed doses/dosages, IV fluid rates, and fluid additives for continuous rate infusions Perform automated laboratory tests including but not limited to use of in-house equipment such as Catalyst, VetStat, ProCyte, Heska EPOC, and SCA2000 Safely perform various radiographic techniques on awake, sedated, and anesthetized patients Perform manual laboratory analysis including but not limited to blood smear evaluation, PCV/TS, blood typing and cross-matching, fecal analysis, and urinalysis Scrub in and assist with surgical procedures while maintaining asepsis Learn and perform scrub in procedure and patient draping Assist in equipment cleaning, maintenance and regular quality control procedures as needed. Trouble shoot equipment failure and report issues to staff veterinarians and inventory manager Pull surgical packs and instruments for surgical cases ahead of scheduled procedures
