Job Purpose: The purpose of the Veterinary Laboratory Technician is to perform non-imaging diagnostic tests with specialized equipment including but not limited to hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and microscopy. This will also include management of lab samples from multiple departments, reviewing accuracy of test results, entering results manually into medical results, processing, and packaging tests to be sent to reference laboratories. To keep the laboratory running efficiently to ensure accurate and quick results for all hospital departments. This position will also help in the pharmacy, dispensing medications, and keeping things stocked and organized.
Laboratory Duties & Responsibilities:
Ability to operate blood sampling machines
Sorting, tracking, and processing in-house and outside lab samples.
Ability to read samples under the microscope
Demonstrate some technical skills with training including (but not limited to):
Appropriate sample handling of sample collection, as well as
Routine use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Create and maintain client/patient records.
Maintain appropriate facility records and logs in compliance with regulatory guidelines and company policies.
Ability to deliver client education regarding laboratory testing.
Respect and protect the confidentiality of client and patient information.
Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills.
Interact professionally with clients and fellow staff members.
Must be a team player and be able to interact professionally with members of the medical treatment team.
Handle emergency situations efficiently and calmly.
Participate in regular team meetings and ad hoc committees within the company.
Participate in rounds to ensure continuity of care for patients.
Ensure cleanliness of facility including cleaning kennels, laundry, mopping and cleaning of the hospital (lobby, exam rooms, treatment areas, etc.).
Help the departments keep areas stocked with supplies and check expiry dates
Assist the Inventory Manager with quarterly inventory counts
Other tasks assigned by the direct supervisor or Hospital Director
Pharmacy Duties & Responsibilities:
Calculate, prepare and dispense medications with veterinarian's orders
Reinforce Veterinarians instructions about appropriate methods of administration and any side effects
Distribute any printed materials from Veterinarians as needed
Prepare all inpatient medications for all departments and distribute these medications to the Veterinary Technicians of each area.
Take phone calls regarding prescription refills and inquiries from clients, veterinary technicians, and outside pharmacies
Ability to receive multiple oral and written instructions, and efficiently and accurately perform them in a timely manner
Stock and maintain adequate inventories for all medications. Work with inventory specialist to create and adjust reorder points
Log and keep accurate records of all controlled substances. Work with leadership on reconciliation
Maintains a safe and clean pharmacy by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.

Knowledge/Skills
Degree in animal health or veterinary assisting. Experience in lieu of education possible.
Experience equivalent to job duties and responsibilities
A good knowledge of basic human drugs (brand names and generic names) is a minimum requirement, and we will train you on animal specific medications if necessary
