Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing and supervising the provision of veterinarian services in support of animal shelter operations.

Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork.

This is a non-bargaining unit management position.

Pay Grade

Competitive salary and benefits. Minimum salary is $108,345 per year. Starting salary may be higher depending on experience and qualifications.

Grade U

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of veterinary medicine.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver\'s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain State of Alaska license to practice veterinarian medicine.

Animal shelter veterinary experience preferred. Clinic management experience preferred.

Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer employment physical.

Completion of required Incident Command System (ICS) courses in accordance with established Borough policy.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs surgeries, including spays, neuters, and other procedures for shelter animals.
  • Examines, diagnoses, and treats animals in routine and emergency situations.
  • Establishes standards of care including policies and procedures for cleaning, feeding, handling, and treating animals.
  • Establishes euthanasia protocols consistent with current standards of care; trains staff as euthanasia technicians; performs and monitors the performance of euthanasia\'s.
  • Oversees the maintenance of medical records.
  • Assists with training and supervising staff in the cleaning, feeding and handling of shelter animals, in the visual evaluation of animals and in the identification of veterinary needs; trains and supervises staff in the basic treatment of sick or injured animals.
  • Trains and authorizes staff to administer microchips and vaccines.
  • Assists with the investigation of animal abuse cases, including evidence collection, Title 24 interpretation, and testifying in court and in administrative hearings.
  • Files investigative reports and case files.
  • Reviews and recommends best practices for animal care and chemical immobilization.
  • Confers with other animal care and control organizations, animal care professionals, and interest groups regarding animal care issues, programs and policies.
  • Conducts seminars, gives presentations, and communicates with the public to provide information regarding animal care, animal regulations, shelter medicine, and other animal related topics.
  • Participates in the establishment, monitoring, and evaluation of shelter holding and administrative procedures such as intake, release, adoption, and quarantine.
  • Collects and processes data to prepare a variety of regular and special reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual department budget.
  • Ensures the appropriate handling and disposal of medical-related equipment and supplies.
  • Oversees the ordering and handling of controlled substances; maintains an individual or shelter DEA license; ensures that appropriate regulations are followed.
  • Assists with volunteer activities such as adoption events, fund raisers, etc.
  • Oversees the planning, promotion and implementation of community low-cost spay/neuter clinics.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to local veterinarians who volunteer at the shelter.
  • Performs related duties.
