Veteran Employment Specialist
(Workforce Services Specialist) If you are a Veteran who likes working with people and helping them be successful, this is the job for you. The Workforce Development Division (WDD) at the Department of Workforce Services (DWS) is looking for a skilled and motivated Veteran to fill a Veteran Employment Specialist position. The individual in this position will split their time working as a Disabled Veterans\' Outreach Program (DVOP) Employment Counselor as well as a Veteran Outreach Specialist. This position will work in the St. George Employment Center.
**Federal program requirements mandate this position be filled by a Veteran**

Principal Duties
The DVOP Employment Counselor in this position will deliver a broad range of services to assist Veterans and help them to be competitive in the labor market. Services typically include:

  • Developing job and training opportunities for Veterans.
  • Providing outreach and offering assistance to disabled and other Veterans by promoting community and employer support for employment and training opportunities, including apprenticeship and on-the-job training.
  • Reaching out to veteran service organizations and partner agencies to find customers that need DWS services.
  • Assessing needs and educating customers about DWS programs, policies and services.
  • Providing assistance in the application process for temporary assistance programs (Food Stamps, Financial, Medicaid, Child Care and Unemployment Insurance).
  • Helping Utah Veterans overcome barriers to employment by assisting with job search techniques, resume writing, work readiness and interviewing skills.
  • Identifying and translating skills and training obtained through military service to civilian careers.
  • Assisting Utah Veterans in attaining certificates and licenses using their military training and experience or by assisting with short-term training.
  • Connecting ACE participants to the programs and services offered by DWS.
  • Visiting homes when needed to establish relationship, increase rapport, problem solve and to engage or re-engage the customer.
  • Assisting customers with resume creation, networking, mock interviewing and job searching with technology.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position is someone who:
  • Is a Veteran; a copy of your DD-214 must be uploaded to this application to be considered and must list your character of service.
  • Has working knowledge of the various branches of the US Armed Forces, located within the state of Utah, to include their Active, Guard and Reserve components.
  • Has the ability to provide family focused career counseling and proactively engage and motivate customers.
  • Has knowledge of DWS programs.
  • Has knowledge of agency programs, community resources and services, local labor market, and job search techniques.
  • Has experience working with veterans overcoming barriers to employment.
  • Has exceptional customer service skills and ability to assist people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism without prejudice or bias.
