Characteristics of the Position
General Overview Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on automobiles, trucks, buses, snow removal equipment or any gasoline or diesel transportation equipment; services and maintains equipment to check that all are in good running order or are repaired or otherwise serviced; performs preventive maintenance work, including mechanical, electrical, programming, diagnostic, lubrication and interior and exterior repairs; orders automotive supplies; transports vehicles to and from garages; responsible for towing, starting, tire repair, including changing and balancing and plowing, or any other related duties.
Key Responsibilities and Duties Operates tow trucks; responsible for towing Sheriff\xe2\x80\x99s Office and designated Cook County vehicles to specified vehicle service locations, including private vendors, as needed; and properly documents tows as directed, including entry into electronic databases. Performs inspections, preventative maintenance and complete repairs of department vehicles (gasoline and diesel) such as automobiles, light duty trucks, light duty vans, snowplow equipment and buses, including but not limited to oil changes, lubrication and changing of fuel, oil, air and transmission filters, replacing headlights, tail lights, marker lights etc. All jobs must be performed in accordance with Mitchell Job/Labor Standards. Also includes replacing or repairing belts, hoses, wires, plugs, water pumps, checks and replaces batteries and cables, services brakes, including replacing of pads, shoes, rotors, drums, cylinders, brake lines and/or hoses and fluids, replaces shocks, front end parts, starters, alternators, radiators, air conditioning, etc.; replaces windshield wipers as needed; checks and fills fluid levels such as oil, washer solution, transmission coolant, etc. All jobs must be performed in accordance with Mitchell Job/Labor Standards. Removes tires and replaces on department vehicles; removes tires from rim, repairs flat(s), remounts tire(s) and balances wheels. Reviews daily automotive maintenance reports/notes and checks all automotive malfunctioning complaints, diagnosing all mechanical problems and identifying parts for replacement; takes necessary service measures to remedy malfunctions or brings them to the attention of the Supervisor. Performs inspection and safety checks, including oil change, lubrication, fluid check and flush if required. Performs research and all required performance values, codes, color-coding, fluid types and OEM specified replacement parts for performance in the repair of equipment (Indentafix/Mitchell). Responds, either on an emergency basis or otherwise, to safely connect, transport/relocate and release any fleet vehicle(s) to repair center(s) and retrieve vehicle(s) upon completion of repair. Keeps station garage clean and orderly. Cleans stores and secures all tools, equipment and supplies or any automotive property. Safely stores and dispenses all vehicle service liquids or gases used in the combustion, lubrication, refrigeration or hydraulics of fleet. Maintains complete station records as to services and repairs administered to vehicles assigned, inputting all work performed in work tickets or computer entry screen; inventories automotive supplies. Notifies Supervisor of any serious or hazardous malfunctions found during any type of inspection or maintenance procedure.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Possess a competent understanding and working knowledge of the components, mechanisms and mechanical operations of various types of vehicles. Ability to operate light duty and flatbed tow trucks and buses. Ability to operate a hand-held radio when on assignment. Ability to diagnose vehicle problem(s) with or without the use of computerized diagnostic tools. Ability to inspect and repair various types of vehicles; skilled use of equipment and tools required in the inspection, diagnosis and repair of vehicles. Ability to maintain detailed and accurate job tickets, departmental forms and records of service and repairs. Possess time-management skills to complete assigned tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Possess effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Ability to adhere to prescribed safety measures. Ability to work in a potentially loud environment that may cause exposure to odors and/or fumes and other aspects of a mechanics garage environment. Capable of handling hazardous materials and chemicals, including but not limited to gasoline, oil and coolants. Ability to perform assigned duties in garage and in field in all weather conditions. Ability to kneel, stoop, lay on back, bend, turn, twist, squat, push, pull and stand for extended periods of time, as required in the execution and completion of duties. Ability to perform physical activity over extended periods of time, as required in the execution and completion of duties. Ability to use tools of a moderate to heavy weight, including but not limited to hoists, jacks, drills, air tools, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, lathes, grinders and hammers, as required in the execution and completion of duties. Ability to use step or extension ladder, as required in the execution and completion of duties.
Minimum Qualifications Possession of a High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) test Certificate. Two (2) or more years of full time, professional work experience with a thorough working knowledge of mechanical operation of automobiles, light duty trucks and vans. Possess and maintain a valid Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License with the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Possession of a Commercial Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License (CDL) OR the ability to pass all testing required to obtain a CDL within three (3) months of hire date. No past criminal record of conviction for a felony or record of conviction for a misdemeanor for traffic violations involving driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, leaving the scene of an accident or accidents involving death; no record of a suspended or revoked driver\xe2\x80\x99s license within the past five (5) years; must successfully pass a background investigation. Preferred Qualifications Possession of a Commercial Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License (CDL). Possession of an Automotive Technician Certificate /OR the ability to obtain certification as an Automotive Technician within one (1) year of employment with Cook County. Five (5) or more years of full time, professional work experience with a thorough working knowledge of mechanical operation of buses using gasoline or diesel engines.
