Mosquito Control Technician Position Description We are looking to hire a motivated and energetic Mosquito Control Technician to help customers reduce mosquito infestations. The current position to be filled starts as part-time and seasonal. The successful applicant will be able to increase sales of services to elevate this position to full-time. Potential growth will be in the areas of increased mosquito control clients, Bed Bugs, and general pest control services. Bed Bug and general pest control services could elevate this position to a full -time, year-round position if the technician is interested in higher income. TRMVC will provide training opportunities for the technician to be successful. The Mosquito Control Technician's responsibilities include controlling mosquitoes in accordance with the Office Manager and/or Director's directions and company policy. The technician should also be able to efficiently carry out all duties without damaging customers' or company property. The technician should have confident sales and customer service experience sell services near current customers to increase the customer base and improve mosquito control coverage in the areas assigned. The technician must have excellent customer service and people skills. A large part of the position is talking with the customer, educating, and controlling mosquitoes using and IPM approach, using the least pesticides possible while being the most effective control activities. To be successful as a Mosquito Control Technician, you should be able to accurately adjust chemical mixtures based on the quantity needed to eliminate the identified pests. Ultimately, an exceptional Technician should be able to advise customers on additional services required for effective pest management programs. Driving company vehicle of up to 250 miles a day may be required, a lot of which may be very early mornings and/or late nights. Work under the direction of the Office Manager and/or Director. Position requires independent work and must be able to complete tasks when not being directly supervised. Be assigned to work areas in Klamath and Deschutes Counties which he/she performs mosquito surveillance, larviciding and adulticiding activities using biological, cultural or chemical methods of control. Perform mosquito ULV spraying as needed with ATV and/or Truck mounted ULV fogger and backpack foggers. Keep accurate record of sites visited and/or treated, using forms and electronic services/software provided by the Company. Update field maps as needed. Cut and maintain trails that provide access to mosquito breeding sites. Use power equipment, including but not limited to lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, wood chipper, power backpacks, ATV, powered foggers, etc. Perform equipment, facility and grounds maintenance as needed. Attend training/safety sessions/courses as needed for certification and continuing education. Keep informed and follow the Company policies and procedures. Drive Company provided vehicles and operate specialized spray equipment with care and safety. Perform other job duties as assigned by the Office Manager and/or Director. Normal work hours vary and flexible. Typically, early mornings and/or late nights. Monday through Friday with work hours in the evening. Oregon State Department of Motor Vehicles, drivers report will be required prior to employment. Provide mosquito control services as directed by the Office Manager and/or Director. Educate the public and sell services to neighbors of existing clients. Expand the company's customer base. This position is seasonal and part-time. Technician can develop this position into a full-time position if sales of services are generated for revenue. Technician can work with the Manager and/or Director to create a full-time position if customer base warrants the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: o High school diploma or GED o Be at least 18 years of age o Current valid Oregon Driver's License. o Be insurable under the District's current insurance policy. o Clean drivers record. ? Primary responsibilities o o Spray pesticides utilizing multiple approaches. o o Identify mosquitoes and mosquito sources o o Access infested and overgrown locations. o o Clean and remove pesticides after application. o o Utilize appropriate protective gear and equipment during application. o o Maintain vehicles and equipment. Knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for this position: Through the supervision and training of the Office Manager and/or Director gain knowledge of the techniques of Integrated Pest/Mosquito Management (IPM/IMM) control; specifically in the use of public health insecticides, worker safety, and equipment used in public health pest control. o Compile, analyze and maintain operating and pesticide records o Work effectively and cooperatively with superiors, clients, subordinates, and the public Examples of Field Operations Duties: o Plans and organizes inspections and control operations in conformance with federal/state laws, Company policy and program objectives and methods and findings determined by the Supervisor and/or Director. o Carries out the Company's safety program in pesticide applicator and application equipment safety as required by federal/state laws. o Monitors and reviews inspection and application records for accuracy, completeness, and efficacy of treatment. o Maintains and updates maps and breeding site inventories used in the daily operations of the Company. o Manage public relations situations resulting from field operations; calls on property owners and others concerned and explains the Company's program and solicits property owners' cooperation in public health pest control. o Solicits new customers in areas of current customers to raise revenue and improve coverage. o Performs inspector/sprayer technician personnel duties as needed. o Performs other duties as assigned to carry out essential functions as directed by the District's Supervisor and/or Director. Mosquito Control Technician Responsibilities: o Safely operate motor vehicles, including towing trailer with ATV. o Independently performs daily inspections of outdoor larval mosquito breeding sites and application of biologically targeted larvicides to prevent the emergence of mosquito larvae. o Accurately record mosquito site inspection and larvicide application data. o Provide effective customer service and public education communication with residents. o Maintain field equipment and company vehicle. o Conduct nighttime ULV fogging with ATV or truck mounted foggers. Technician Responsibilities: o Determining the kind of treatment required to eliminate a particular type of pest. o Advising customers on the kind of treatment required to eliminate identified pests. o Inspecting customers' premises to identify pest problems. o Filling out all necessary paperwork upon completion of each job. o Communicating with office staff in order to schedule services with customers. o Applying suitable pesticides to infested areas by following the label instructions and complying with safety procedures. o Responding to customers' requests for various services. o Identifying opportunities to sell additional company services and products. o Adjusting chemical mixtures according to the size of the infested areas. Mosquito Control Technician REQUIREMENTS: o Season starts around April/ May. Ends Mid September o Oregon Commercial Pesticide License (Laws and Safety and Public Health minimum) o Operate an ATV on uneven surfaces, Oregon Safety Card required (www.rideatvoregon.gov) o The ability to work in all weather conditions. o Excellent problem-solving skills. o Effective communication skills. o Exceptional customer service skills. o Proven sales skills. o Detail-oriented. o Be able to accurately interpret pesticide labels and make proper pesticide applications using information contained within the label. o Be able to learn the operation of specialized equipment. o Be safety minded with the ability to keep detailed records and evaluate situations while accurately adopting an effective course of action. o Be able to work independently and cooperatively with other employees and the public. o Be able to adapt to the irregular hours inherently involved in public pest control. o Be in good physical condition (able to lift and carry 65 lbs.) and hike outdoors daily in uneven/unstable terrain. o Attend mandatory classroom and field training. o Ability to read maps/aerial photos, prior field biology experience, knowledge of aquatic insects and outdoor work or volunteer experience is helpful but not necessary. o Ability to read and manipulate Google Maps. o Ability to learn different mapping software programs. o Accept that duties may result in possible exposure to severe weather, pesticides, dust and airborne particulates, loud noises, biting insects, noxious plants, and wild or domestic animals. The position will start at part-time, approximately 24 hours a week, seasonal, ending by September. There is high potential for the right, motivated candidate, to raise hours to full-time, if the candidate is willing to work with the company in growing the client base. Commission for sales is also a possibility which could make earnings as high as the candidate is willing and able to go. Study materials will be available upon request. Preparing for and taking the pesticide applicator test will be required before hire. Company will pay for test once passed and hired, fees will be deducted from employees pay and reimbursed upon completion of 90 days of employment. Oregon Department of Agriculture Laws and Safety exam must be taken and completed within 7 days of hire. Oregon Department of Agriculture Public Health Exam must be taken and passed within 21 days of hire. QualityPro exams must be completed within 90 days of hire. All exams are a condition of employment (failure to pass the exams are grounds for ending employment) Bugs and creepy-crawlers should not scare you. Probationary period to start for training after test is passed. Clean driving record and valid driver's license required. Drivers background check is required. Driving is a large part of the job. May require daily travel of a couple hundred miles in company vehicle, each day. Experience with equipment and mechanically inclined individuals are a plus. Experience operating an ATV on uneven terrain. Possession of ATV operations safety permit (http://www.rideatvoregon.org) required upon hiring. Experience towing a small trailer is a plus; towing of trailer is required. Sales experience is a plus; position requires sales of service to continue beyond seasonal/part-time. Ability to lift and carry 65+ lbs of equipment is required. Able to walk on uneven terrain is required. Criminal history background checks are required. Drug free workplace.
