This position serves grant-identified target high school students.
The TRIO-Upward Bound (UB) Program at USD is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program is designed to generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in post-secondary education. Participants are talented high school students who come from income-qualifying backgrounds and/or where neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree. This position assists and mentors Upward Bound participants in successfully completing high school in four years, preparing for college acceptance and scholarships, and mentoring to succeed in completing a college degree.
This position operates in the field and needs a highly motivated individual who will work independently to the highest standards without direct supervision.
Essential job functions include:
Direct guidance and support to participants (high school students in the Target Schools) via weekly site visits including: mentoring, advising, tutoring, and assisting with college access activities including financial aid, college applications and test prep.
Serving as a liaison between program, participants, parents, and schools
Maintaining confidential records documenting services provided
Recruiting new participants from the designated Target Schools
Required Qualifications
Minimum of Bachelor's degree in education, social work, counseling or related field or comparable work experience.
Experience teaching, counseling or advising high school students.
Knowledge of low-income and/or first generation and rural student populations.
Strong communication skills.
All applicants should clearly demonstrate: experience with, and commitment to, low-income/first-generation youth. All personnel must have a valid driver's license.
Position is grant funded. Continued employment is contingent on availability of funding, performance and the needs of the institution.
