Description of Work This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV position in the Forsyth County Traffic Services Unit. This position is located in Forsyth County, but work will be performed across all 5 counties in Division 9. The primary purpose of this position will be to serve as the crew lead on long line paint markings crew, pre-line specialist, and pavement markings inspector (as needed). This selected applicant is expected to be dependable and have a strong working knowledge of all Traffic Services operations and procedures, including the installation of long line paint, thermoplastic special pavement markings and sign installation on State maintained roads in Division 9, in compliance with NCDOT Standards. As well as the necessary pre-lining of long line markings and/or special markings. This position will be responsible for inspecting the installation of pavement markings by contractors. In addition, this position will be subject to 24-hour emergency response for the repairs of damaged regulatory signs, installation/maintenance of emergency detours, and snow and ice removal. The selected applicant will be expected to possess an intermediate level of experience in pre-lining and the operation of thermoplastic and paint machines. Must be able to properly install or manage the installation of temporary traffic control as needed, in accordance with NCDOT Standards. Ability to plan and carry out assigned projects independently. Must be able to communicate effectively with various people across multiple organizations, as well as with the public. This position requires the ability to work in an outdoor environment, including extreme heat and cold, year-round.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 / $37,782 - $66,120
Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in planning, scheduling and carrying out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision
  • Experience with MUTCD Standards and Roadway Specifications in laying out pavement markings including longlines, symbols and characters
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 of the following pieces of equipment: Forklift, Paint Truck, Sign Truck and Thermoplastic Pavement Marking Cart
  • Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
  • Experience in one of the following: long line pavement marking installation, traffic sign installation, or thermoplastic special pavement marking installation
Additional Expectations:
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing. Safety-toe shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
