Description of Work This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in the Division 9 Traffic Services Unit. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the sign crew leader in Stokes County for Traffic Services. This position is stationed in Forsyth County, but work will be performed across all 5 counties in Division 9, as needed. The duties of this position include installation, maintenance, and repair of signs across Division 9. Applicants should have experience maintaining a sign inventory. In addition, this position will be subject to 24-hour emergency response for the repairs of damaged regulatory signs, installation/maintenance of emergency detours, install pavement markings, and snow/lce removal. The employee in this position must possess an intermediate level of experience in the operation of a sign truck with attachments, and aerial lift truck. Applicants must be able to properly install or manage the installation of temporary traffic control as needed in accordance with NC DOT Standards and the ability to plan and carry out assigned projects independently. Must be able to communicate effectively with various people across multiple organizations, as well as with the public. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 / $34,270 - $59,973
Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in the installation of roadway signs
  • Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (paint truck, pre-line paint machine, asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
  • Knowledge in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
  • Experience operating a sign truck with attachments
Additional Expectations:
Safety-toed shoes required. This position must apply safety philosophy to all operations. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on work sites including night work, height, highway traffic and traversing rough terrain in performing necessary work. Ability to supervise activities of lower-level employees and instruct them in proper work methods in the installation, repair, and maintenance of highway signs.
North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
