This posting may be used to fill five (5) Transportation Worker II positions with Wake County Maintenance. (60019093, 60019091, 60019057, 60019055, & 60019069) You only have to apply once to be considered for all five positions.

Salary Grade: NC05 / Salary Range: $31,200 - $54,101

This posting is for a Transportation Worker II position located in the Wake County Maintenance Unit located in Raleigh, NC. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside feature. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform variety of other assigned duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Qualified applicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of Basic Work Zone and Traffic Control
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
  • Experience in the operation of at least 1 piece of the following equipment: asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, or tractor \xe2\x80\x9cA\xe2\x80\x9d boom mower

Additional Expectations:
Must operate a Class A motor vehicle and/or perform flagging operation to safely guide traffic through work zones; receive and give effective written and oral communications; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; operate equipment that vibrates; perform essential functions in extreme hot and/or cold weather; ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain; repetitively lift 50 lbs. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Safety-toe shoes are required. Pre-employment drug testing is required. Possession of a current Commercial Driver License is mandatory for essential duties. CDL can be obtained through on-the-job training with 360 days to obtain a license. Preference given to applicants who possess commercial driver license/permit. Pre-employment drug testing required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release of form (ALCDGR-01) and a back-ground statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past 2 years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
