Overview

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) Drilling Unit is seeking a dependable and motivated individual who enjoys working in a team environment. Job duties may include hauling equipment to a site, creating access and utility clearance for the equipment, drilling and sampling through various soil and rock conditions, and installation of monitoring equipment. Drilling to obtain subsurface samples and information is used to characterize sites for the design and construction of the States transportation infrastructure.

The Drilling Unit provides support to Agency counterparts through project concept, design, and construction. Drilling projects are located across the state requiring travel and overtime. The ideal candidate will be detail and safety-oriented, possess strong communication skills, and be willing to problem solve in the field.

This position is eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $2000! Newly hired CDL and non-CDL holders who are hired into permanent maintenance worker or mechanic job on or after July 3, 2022 are eligible. CDL Application Requirements

Maintenance work for the Agency of Transportation involving a variety of tasks relating to the state transportation system. Incumbents are often responsible for routine maintenance and repair work. Duties typically require the use of a variety of tools and vehicles. Overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment. A newly hired employee must complete all VTTC training requirements for the Job Development Plan (JDP) and demonstrate knowledge and skills in a minimum of six areas of maintenance or construction activities. Work is performed under the supervision of an AOT Area Maintenance Supervisor or higher level maintenance worker.

Environmental Factors

Duties require the ability to withstand exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule/ area and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and debris from roadside litter are present. May be exposed to blood or airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on roads with moving traffic. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of work experience in construction, equipment operation, or related manual labor INCLUDING EITHER one season of operating a snowplow with wings OR six (6) months of operating medium or heavy equipment, such as graders, excavators, and backhoes.
OR
Upon successful completion of original probation as a Transportation Operations Technician I AND possession of a Class A Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Special Requirements

A Class B Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL) is required.
An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of assigned workstation.
Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver\'s License with Tanker Endorsement is required within the first six months of employment.
An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within one (1) year or be enrolled.
Note: Non-original probationary employees must obtain a required CDL license prior to the completion of six (6) months of service in the position.
