DESCRIPTION OF WORK
In this position, you will be responsible for inspecting all aspects of transportation construction activities. Your duties will include assisting in the verification of grades, elevations, and the layout of structures and roadways in collaboration with contractors and surveyors. You will also oversee the proper placement of various materials, including cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and drainage components, ensuring compliance with project specifications. Additionally, you will conduct compaction testing using visual non-movement methods on sub-surface strata, soils, and aggregates. Engaging with department personnel, as well as federal, state, and local agencies, will be essential to facilitate effective project administration and communication with legislators and the public.
Your role will involve maintaining detailed records through master diary entries, performing mathematical calculations, estimating item quantities and project costs, and managing all relevant documentation, whether manually or electronically. You will assist in troubleshooting field issues as they arise and compile photographic evidence, sketches, and inspection summaries. As part of the inspection team, you will document and verify the work completed by contractors, adhering to the guidelines set forth in the Project Office Manual (Publication 2) and Publication 408. You will generate necessary reports to maintain project records, interpret results to monitor progress and schedules, and track material quantities and testing through both manual and computerized systems. Furthermore, you will create sketches, note any changes to field plans, and maintain comprehensive inspection progress and quality control reports related to ongoing work.
It is crucial to ensure that all projects are executed in compliance with existing regulations, policies, and procedures while being completed efficiently and cost-effectively. You will also be required to participate in environmental training as mandated, demonstrating and applying sound environmental practices throughout your work. Additional responsibilities may include performing related tasks associated with the inspection of highway construction projects as assigned, as well as fulfilling duties designated by your supervisor during winter assignments.
