This position is located in the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Operations Administration (OA), Roadway Operations & Safety Division, and Roadway Operations Patrol Branch. The mission of DDOT is to equitably deliver a safe, sustainable and reliable multimodal transportation network for all residents and visitors of the District of Columbia. The Roadway Operation & Safety Division oversees all transportation safety and its infrastructure. The Roadway Operations Patrol Branch operates within the division and specializes in traffic management, reporting crashes and incidents. The Branch assists with the clean up and removal of accidents and/or redirects traffic zones and special events.
Duties and Responsibilities
Patrols District roadways and bridges in support of DDOT and other public agencies at incident scenes. Assists motorist with disabled vehicles, reports abandoned vehicles for removal, and reports/clears debris that affect traffic operations. Communicates actively with DDOT's TMC to report events or receive instructions to solve traffic issues as directed by TMC or supervisors from TOA. Implements temporary traffic control measures to guide traffic, and safeguard motorists, pedestrians, and property at incident scenes. Coordinates with other agencies (regional, federal, city and local police, fire/rescue, etc.) to determine the most efficient means of re-routing traffic and clear incidents from the roadway.
Monitors closed circuits televisions systems, police scanners and citizens ban radio transmissions for incident detection and verification and transmit radio communications between DDOT and other agencies, such as the Metropolitan Police Department, CHART, etc. Dispatches necessary response equipment to incident scenes; and may operate motorized equipment such as tow trucks heavy-duty wreckers. Documents equipment and manpower used during incidents for recovery purposes
Qualifications and Education
Specialized Experience:
Specialized experience is the experience that is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, at least one (1) year of specialized experience is equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.
Licenses and Certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Incumbent must maintain a clear motor vehicle driving record.
A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the District of Columbia or any state or jurisdiction is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience operating heavy-duty vehicles--such as dump trucks, tow trucks, semi-trailers, and other specialized machinery is preferred.
Working Conditions/Environment
The work environment of this position executes their duties outdoors throughout the year, exposed to extremely high and low temperatures, as well as snow, light, moderate and heavy rain, and other inclement weather conditions. Duties frequently place the incumbent in environments with flying dust, grime stirred up by passing vehicles, or high winds. Through their work on the Roadway Operations Patrol team members are exposed to vehicle exhaust which contains a variety of gases and particulate matter, primarily due to the combustion of fuel. The most common components fuel combustion includes carbon dioxide, water vapor, and smaller amounts of potentially harmful substances like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide that may cause difficulty in breathing. This position operation also requires heightened awareness due to active traffic conditions, necessitating strict adherence to safety protocols to minimize the risk of injury.
