NATURE OF WORK
This is a semi-skilled position in the operation of public transit providing transportation for all residents of Watonwan County, including the elderly, disabled and the general public. Employees in this class work under the general supervision of the Transit Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsible for driving and inspecting 12-19 passenger handicapped accessible transit buses on established weekly routes and on daily dial-a-ride trips dispatched by the Transit Director. Assists patrons in and out of the vehicle, and to and from their residence. Performs occasional delivery services. Answers requests for information and explains the transit services to the public. Performs other work as required.
Responsible to observe all Watonwan County safety rules and to apply the principles of accident prevention in day-to-day duties. Required to submit to and pass pre-employment, random and post-accident FTA drug and alcohol testing. A criminal background check and driver's license record check will be required on an annual basis.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
A combination of training and experience equivalent to experience in operating light trucks and some experience of public contact nature. Requires a valid Minnesota Driver's License. To drive some of the buses, a Commercial Driver's License, Class C, B or A with Passenger Endorsement is required.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Skill in operating vehicles on various roadways and in residential areas along with various road conditions in inclement weather. Knowledge of operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of assigned vehicle. Ability to recognize operating deficiencies in the assigned vehicle.
Knowledge of the street and highway system and geography of Watonwan County and surrounding areas, or the ability to acquire such knowledge in a relatively short period of time. Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances and regulations. Ability to maintain a log book. Physical strength and ability to assist disabled individuals into and out of the vehicle, including wheelchair-bound passengers. Drivers will not assist wheelchair-bound passengers up or down steps.
Ability to learn the interests and needs of the bus patrons. Ability and sensitivity to successfully contact and communicate with senior citizens and people with disabilities. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other employees and to work courteously and tactfully with the general public of all ages.
