Pay and Benefits:
In addition to a comprehensive, low-cost benefits package, King County Metro offers some of the most competitive pay rates in the region for Transit Auto Body Technicians. Fully qualified, journey-level technicians start at 90% of the salary range (Step 3 of 5), with additional shift differentials for evening and overnight work. Below are the pay rates for fully qualified Transit Auto Body Technicians:
First Shift: $49.91/hour
Second Shift : +5% Shift Differential ($52.41/hour)
Third Shift : + 7.5% Shift Differential ($53.66/hour )
Applicants who demonstrate less-than full proficiency during testing may be offered a position at pay step 2, along with a 12-month individual training plan and qualification period designed to help them reach journey-level status. The step 2 pay rates are as follows:
First Shift: $44.37/hour
Second Shift: +5% Shift Differential ($46.59/hour )
Third Shift: +7.5% Shift Differential ($ 47.70/hour)
Safety-Sensitive Position
This position is considered safety-sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment, and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.
Position and Vacancy Details:
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) or more Transit Auto Body Technician positions within the Vehicle Maintenance division. These 17-month Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) / Special Duty Assignment (SDA) positions may be eligible for extension. An eligibility list of qualified candidates may be created to fill future Transit Auto Body Technician positions as they become available. If created, the eligibility list would remain active until exhausted and utilized at the hiring authority's discretion. Although initial vacancies within Vehicle Maintenance are often temporary in duration, they are full-time, benefits-eligible, and may have the opportunity to convert to career service (permanent) positions, when possible. Vehicle Maintenance invests heavily in its staff's development, and SDA/TLT positions give candidates a chance to gain knowledge, skills, and experiences that can be applied to future opportunities.

Applying

principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role you will apply
equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work. As the Transit Auto Body Technician, you will also:
Perform body repair, frame straightening, and structural maintenance work on damaged transit coaches and equipment, such as buses, trolleys, trucks, cars, cleaners, forklifts, streetcars, line hoisters, and ventilation systems.
Perform sheet metal body repair on vehicles involving sheet metal layout, template making and fabricating, and repairing both metal and fiberglass body sections.
Cut, form, weld, rivet, and braze metals to specification when repairing and fabricating body and equipment sections. This involves working in conformance with blueprints, sketches, photographs, specifications, standard shop practices, and written instructions.
Repair and replace various vehicle parts of non-metal materials, including glass and windows, cloth, wood, plastic, rubber, and fiberglass.
Make minor repairs to electrical wiring when removing or replacing marker lights, headlights, taillights, and interior lights.
Repair body sections and parts of damaged transit coaches involving sheet metal and other related structural work.
Prime sheet metal surfaces and structures to prevent corrosion and contamination as required.
Perform sheet metal repair work on equipment and facilities such as cyclone cleaners, ventilation systems, garage doors, passenger shelters, and other components and equipment.
Set up and safely operate metal, glass, and woodworking equipment, such as shears, brakes, rollers, grinders, saws, jacks, punches, folders, drills, sanders, gas/ electric welders, and frame-straightening equipment.
Assist other repair units in performing repair and mechanical work.
Maintain records of orders, completed repairs, time worked, and materials used; enter and extract data using an automated vehicle maintenance system; ensure work orders are complete and legible.
Perform other duties as assigned.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Work is performed in an automobile and transit bus bay setting where there is exposure to moving machinery, fumes, and solvents. The employee performs large amounts of sanding so there is an exposure to dust, even while utilizing vacuum equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
: Work requires the ability to meet peak and prolonged physical effort on a regular basis. Frequent lifting or carrying of welding and cutting tools weighing up to 50 pounds is required. Occasionally carrying, with assistance, metal, wood, equipment, and other objects weighing up to 100 pounds, is also required.

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate the following
minimum qualifications

Experience, Education, and Training:
At least four (4) years of hands-on experience performing body/ structural repairs and sheet metal fabrication for automotive and heavy-duty equipment;
OR
Verified completion of a recognized 2-year apprenticeship or community college program for automotive body repair
AND
2+ years of hands-on experience performing body/ structural repairs and sheet metal fabrication for automotive and heavy-duty equipment;
OR
Demonstrates journey-level (or advanced professional-level) knowledge and proficiency in safely performing auto body repair, heavy-duty equipment repair, structural maintenance, and sheet metal work, gained through any combination of work experience, education, or specialized training in relevant techniques, tools, and practices.
Technical Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Proficiency in sheet metal fabrication techniques: Includes layout and bench work skills such as measuring to specifications, mathematical skills, drilling, riveting, welding, and assembling to meet exact requirements. Demonstrated skill in safely and effectively welding structural parts and frames using MIG welding equipment (such as a Millermatic 140 auto-set, or similar welding equipment) and shielding gas.
Skill with related tools and shop equipment: Demonstrates the ability to use the full range of hand tools, precision tools, and shop equipment required for sheet metal fabrication, auto body repairs, welding, and structural framework repairs.
Uses appropriate repair methods and materials: Skilled in using both traditional and modern auto body restoration and repair techniques, related sheet metal fabrication techniques, and skill in performing structural repairs of automotive and heavy-duty equipment.
Proficiency with fiberglass application: Skill in prepping surfaces for fiberglass application, measuring and mixing resin/hardener, and applying fiberglass to ensure structural integrity of repairs.
Knowledge of safety standards: Demonstrates understanding and consistent application of industrial and shop safety regulations, standards, and procedures that apply to working safely in a vehicle repair facility.
Proper use of PPE: Ensures consistent and correct use of any required or recommended personal protective equipment for all job-related tasks.
Communication and Teamwork Skills:
Computer literacy: Skilled in using office software programs including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and email.
Communication skills: Effective verbal and written communication, with the ability to understand and follow detailed instructions.
Teamwork and independence: Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team environment.
Commitment to workplace culture: Must demonstrate the ability to contribute to a work culture centered on safety, respect, equity, inclusion, and diversity.
Desirable qualifications include (but are NOT required):
Experience with transit and heavy-duty vehicles: Experience performing body work and structural post-collision repair on transit coaches, buses, trailers, utility and tow trucks, automotive vehicles, and related equipment.
Experience using any frame-pulling equipment or racks
Custom fabrication and other restoration skills: Skilled in fabricating custom metal work, metal restoration, automotive panel replacement, and replacing a variety of glass and windshields.
Additional Certification: Documented experience as a certified body shop technician or master collision repair technician.
Necessary Special Requirements:
You will need to supply your own set of heavy equipment tools and a rolling tool cart with a minimum of five (5) drawers. A list of required tools will be provided if selected for the position, or you may request a copy of the tool list by emailing the recruiter.
Must be willing to work any shift assignment at any base location, and on any shift or schedule as assigned . This includes weekdays, nights, weekends, and/or holidays if scheduled or required.
Must be willing and able to report to the worksite in inclement weather.
Licensing Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's license with an acceptable 5-year driving record
Must obtain a valid Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) before hire, andsuccessfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake and passenger endorsement within 90 days of hire.
After you are hired, King County Metro will provide paid training with our own experts to support your efforts in obtaining your Class B CDL.

TESTING EVENT AND SELECTION PROCESS:

In-Person Testing Event: Thursday January 8th, 2026, between 2:45PM and 10:00 PM PST.
PRACTICAL / HANDS-ON TESTING:
Candidates must pass a 2.5-hour hands-on skills test intended to gauge their ability to follow directions and complete job-related tasks within a time limit.
Outlined below are some of the competencies that will be assessed. It is recommended that you refresh your knowledge and skills in these specified areas:Welding and fabrication
Metal straightening and body filler
Fiberglass and composite repair
Layout and riveting
Frame alignment and straightening using pull equipment
Correct use of safety techniques and tools for areas above
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Please be prepared to bring a respirator that complies with all OSHA regulations related to performing Auto Body Repair work. If you are invited to test and do not have an appropriate respirator, one will be provided for you to use. Welding helmets, gloves, coveralls, and ear/eye protection will be provided for testing, but feel free to bring your own PPE if you are more comfortable using your own. All necessary tools and safety equipment will be provided, and you will have the ability to ask clarifying questions prior to beginning each testing station.
PANEL INTERVIEWS:
After a brief break, candidates may be asked to participate in a 30-minute panel interview to find out more about your knowledge, experiences, and critical thinking skills. You will be allowed to preview a printed copy of the interview questions for 15 minutes prior to your interview, and any notes you make on the preview document may be used as a point of reference for yourself.

Candidates who accept a contingent offer of employment must meet all pre-employment screening requirements for King County safety-sensitive positions. Work Schedule and Location:
Metro's Vehicle Maintenance Division operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Work locations and shift assignments selected twice per year during a seniority-based "pick". Work is performed at the job site, 40-hours per week with two consecutive days off (not necessarily Saturday and Sunday). This position is not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is therefore eligible for overtime hours.
