The tennis professional is responsible for developing, promoting all tennis activities for club members and guests under the Direction of the Director of Tennis. This role involves teaching lessons for all ages and skill levels, running events and tournaments, and maintaining a high standard for the tennis facilities. They are expected to enhance the club's reputation by providing exceptional service and fostering an engaging, supportive tennis environment.
Job duties and responsibilities
Instruction and coaching:
-Conduct private and group lessons for players of all ages and skill levels.
-Develop and implement instructional programs, lesson plans, and clinics.
-Provide expert guidance on techniques, strategy, and rules.
Program and event management:
-Organize and run tournaments, camps, social mixers, and other special events.
-Develop programming for junior players, including summer camps and league teams.
-Help members find suitable league teams and provide guidance during league play.
Facility and staff oversight:
-Ensure the tennis courts and equipment are properly maintained and clean. This may involve supervising maintenance assistants and tasks like rolling, brushing, and watering clay courts.
-Manage the pro shop, which can include handling inventory for racquets and strings and assisting with sales.
-Supervise assistant tennis professionals and other staff and oversee the operation of the department in the director's absence.
Promotional and administrative tasks:
-Promote and market tennis programs to attract new participants and engage the existing membership.
-Handle inquiries, maintain records of lessons and attendance, and process member charges.
-Contribute information to the club's newsletter or website.
Member relations:
-Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment for all members.
-Build strong, personalized relationships with members to encourage continued involvement.
Qualifications and requirements
Certifications:
Professional certification from a recognized organization like the Racquet Sports Professionals Association (RSPA) or Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) is required.
Experience:
Previous experience teaching tennis at a club or resort is necessary. A strong playing background is also typically expected.
Skills:
Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills are essential. Candidates must be able to work with all age groups and skill levels.
Availability:
Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and other required hours to accommodate club events and programs.
